Job Summary
The Information Services (IS) department within University Advancement at the University of Utah is excited to bring on a new Desktop Support Technician to our strong and capable team. The IS department is comprised of data and systems professionals and provides direct support to all departments within the University Advancement division. With significant growth in the broader University Advancement organization, the IS department is growing its team to provide continued reliable and high-quality service to University Advancement end-users.
The Desktop Support Technician will support Advancement staff in troubleshooting and resolving problems with computer hardware and software applications on department-issued desktops, laptops, phones, and tablets. This position will support the Advancement staff by troubleshooting user computing requests daily, imaging new computers, installing new hardware and software, upgrading or replacing components of desktop computers and laptops, and serving as a helpdesk resource for assigned areas.

This position will report to the Associate Director of IT within the Information Services team and will collaborate with various members of the larger Advancement Services team, including System Administrators, Business Systems Analysts, and Trainers.

Responsibilities
Facilitate the technical onboarding process of new University Advancement employees including provisioning computing equipment and providing initial training on basic user productivity software (Microsoft Outlook, enterprise cloud services such as Box, etc.).
Monitor the Information Services ticketing system for user requests regarding computing needs.
Provide end-user assistance, troubleshooting, and support for all relevant hardware and software requests, clearly and accurately documenting steps toward resolution.
Review and create process and procedure documentation.
Organize, manage, and audit computing equipment inventory.
Install and upgrade computer hardware and software applications.
Provide support for computer image design, testing, & implementation.
Assist with network support and maintenance related to end-user computers.
Assist with device security audits and maintenance of device security compliance per enterprise security requirements.
Understand and abide by license restrictions and confidentiality guidelines in reference to applications and information stored within the network. Specifically, regulations regarding restricted University data.
Stay current with new computer technology and understand how these relate to ongoing problems and strategic planning.
Additional computing support/helpdesk tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in a computer related field and two years of experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
Demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are required.
Preferences
Highly Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent customer support and customer relations skills with a professional demeanor
Proficiency with MS Windows 11 and Apple ( IOS ) computer operating systems and Microsoft applications
Comfortable communicating with customers in various forms (face-to-face interaction, telephone, email, MS Teams or remote connection communications)
Ability to triage and divert requests to applicable employees and communicate with end users the status of their requests.
Basic network troubleshooting experience (ip/ifconfig, netstat, host,etc)
Basic printer troubleshooting experience (installing print drivers, working with locally installed printers, resetting print spooler, helping end users adjust print settings in various apps to achieve desired results)
Basic A/V troubleshooting experience
Experience with utilizing command line and/or terminal to help troubleshoot and/or resolve issues.
Experience or exposure to basic security principles including patching (OS and third party), disk encryption, vpn usuage, wireless networks, physical security
Experience using Tanium
Experience using MDM software (Intune, Jamf)
Other Preferences:
2+ years of helpdesk or system administration experience.
2+ years of network troubleshooting.
Experience with Microsoft Active Directory and Office 365 ecosystem.
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud products.
