Be part of the team that provides evidence-based solutions and policy recommendations that keep Utah burning bright. * * Job Description: We are seeking a highly analytical and motivated Data Scientist to join our team. This role is pivotal in analyzing and interpreting complex data to inform strategic planning,policy development,and decision-making processes related to the state's energy and mineral resources. The ideal candidate will have a background in data science,statistics,analytics,and machine learning,with a keen interest in energy issues. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support the office's mandates as outlined in State Code Sections 79-6-301 and 79-6-401. * * Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement advanced data analysis,predictive models,and machine learning algorithms to forecast energy supply,demand,and trends.
  • Utilize data analytics to support the strategic planning process,contributing to the development of a strategic energy plan that addresses the state's energy needs over a prospective 30-year period.
  • Continually analyze Utah's energy resources' development to update forecasts as the market changes,ensuring the state's energy model is up to date.
  • Conduct data-driven analysis to support policy recommendations and executive or legislative action related to energy pursuits.
  • Work with specialists to maintain and update a public website and dashboard for transparency and public accessibility of energy data and insights.
  • Documents the data warehouse,including locations and meanings of key fields and how they can be joined with other data.
  • Engage in stakeholder consultation,utilizing data analytics to inform discussions and align strategies with the state's energy policy goals.
  • Communicate complex data findings to non-technical stakeholders,including policymakers,industry partners,and the public.
  • Provide data,figures,and visuals for reports.

* Qualifications:*

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Data Science,Statistics,Mathematics,or a related field,and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in data science,analytics,or a related role,preferably within the energy sector or a related field.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R and experience with SQL.
  • Experience with statistical modeling,data mining techniques,and machine learning algorithms.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Ability to interpret complex data and present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of energy and mineral resource management,policy,and economics is a plus.
