State of Utah - Jobs Bridge Maintenance & Emergency Coordinat in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a motivated person to be the team leader in the Bridge Inspection Section as the Bridge Maintenance and Emergency Coordinator (Engineer IV).  You will lead one or more inspectors in the inspection of bridges under the direction of the Bridge Inspection Program Manager. Principal Duties  As the Bridge Maintenance and Emergency Coordinator, your duties will include:

  • Maintain the bridge emergency response procedures and train UDOT and outside personnel in their use.
  • Coordinate and assist with UDOT Maintenance Stations on bridge maintenance and emergency response topics. Provide a compiled list of bridge maintenance needs. 
  • Review and coordinate the preparation of reports,papers,and presentations for management.
  • Assist in managing small bridge maintenance and preservation projects.
  • Being available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to respond to bridge and structure emergencies throughout the State of Utah.
  • Prepare bridge inspection reports for bridge damage inspections.
  • Coordinate with the Traffic Operations Center and the Utah Highway Patrol on bridge and structure emergencies throughout the State of Utah.
  • Provide support to the Regions for bridge maintenance needs.
  • Support the Bridge Inspection Manager in guiding the direction and management of the inspection,evaluation and documentation of Utah s In-Service Inspection program as needed in fulfilling the requirements of the bridge inspection program.
  • Perform In-Service Bridge inspections,often conducting special,damage,or in-depth inspections.
  • Maintain detailed inspection or investigation records,prepare reports,and attend to other related administrative requirements.
  • Act as a technical resource and trainer for In-Service Bridge Inspectors I,II and III.
  • Perform field QC reviews of In-Service Bridge Inspections.
  • Ensure the general safety of the bridge site.
  • Verify that all safety procedures and the proper use of access equipment are followed as needed.
  • Assist in management and maintenance of vehicles and inspection equipment.

Ideal Candidate In order to qualify,you must:

  • Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Have at least 2 years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Be a Nationally Certified Bridge Inspector (CBI) as per the National Bridge Inspection Standards and must meet the UDOT BMM or be able to obtain within nine months of hire.
  • Have a Remote Pilot License from the FAA,or be able to obtain within one year after hire (the applicable training will be provided by the department).
  • Have strong communication skills in both verbal and written form.

Preferences

Preference may be given to those that have at least one of the following: 

  • Have at least 5 years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • In-Service bridge inspection experience. 
  • Non-destructive testing certifications,such as ultrasonic,dye-penetrant,mag-particle,welding,etc.
  • Have a class A CDL,or be able to obtain within one year after hire and maintain valid license thereafter (the applicable training will be provided by the department).

Supplemental Information Here is some information you should be aware of: 

  • There is only one position available,but there are two job postings to allow both engineers and non-engineers to apply. You do not need to apply for both,but please make sure you apply for the correct one,based on if you are an engineer or not,as we can't transfer applications from one recruitment to another. 
  • This position requires occasional overtime and frequent travel. 
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
  • May be subject to 24 hour availability,overtime and varied work schedules due to bridge and structure emergencies throughout the state of Utah.
  • Physical Requirements: Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend,crouch,stoop,stretch,reach,lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Working Conditions: Requires the incumbent to inspect bridges from above and below using various equipment and may include working at heights,in confined spaces,and with outside elements such as insects,inclement weather,etc.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
