The Multi-disciplinary Design Division ( MDD ) within the College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for an ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR ( LECTURER ) OF DESIGN – non-tenure track career line lecturer. We are seeking a passionate, experienced educator / practitioner who can impart fundamental design skills and approaches in a multi-disciplinary context, as well as bring their own specialization to add to the range of design disciplines with the College.

This position will be a nine-month appointment (1.0 FTE ) to begin on July 1, 2024. Initial appointments will be for 3 years, but can be extended for additional terms.

Multi-disciplinary Design at the University of Utah is a digital, physical and platform product design program. We are a diverse community of academics, professionals and students engaging in design to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world. Students in the program move through a series of experiences exposing them to new technologies, grounded research, craft / making, ethics, leadership skills, entrepreneurship and systems and strategic thinking. Faculty collaborate across campus and around the world, with funded projects resulting in spatial design interventions, installations, exhibitions, systems, policies, programs, community engagement and scholarly outputs that address multiple scales and environmental and social issues. Collectively, we design products, places, experiences and the relationships around them, intelligently tackling complex social and environmental problems by creating innovative design solutions – see https://www.uofu.design/

MDD is looking for a colleague and community member with a commitment to working in social and critical spaces. We expect that this position will attract teachers and practitioners who are interested in the development and delivery of curricula that equips our energetic and ethically grounded students with the skills, knowledge and approaches to thrive as designers, now and into the future. Opportunities exist for experienced educators to shape courses and activities across our program and college, from undergraduate design foundation level through to capstone courses, internships and potential graduate level offerings, as well as administrative leadership of teaching teams and programs. If you are interested in co-designing solutions to complex problems, making things in the digital and / or physical contexts, creating experiences, exercising strategic thinking, speculating design futures and critically (and joyfully) engaging in design pedagogy, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Applicants for career-line lecturing positions must hold a terminal degree in a design related field: The definition of design includes all design and creative disciplines including industrial, product, fine arts, graphic, landscape, urban design, architecture and digital platforms. Teaching assignments can be adjusted to reflect administrative leadership responsibilities, for example directorship of programs. In addition to teaching and administration, we seek candidates who will engage with the creative community of the division through sharing independent research, creative activity and professional practice, as well as participating in studio reviews and committee service. They will be adept at promoting design and its value to a wide audience.

Salary is commensurate with experience. All full-time employees are provided a health benefit plan.
