Definition Highly skilled technical and mechanical work overseeing the operation of a wastewater treatment plant, pumping stations, and other facilities; all other related work as required. Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High school graduation, or equivalent; with chemistry, science and mechanical subjects highly desirable, and five to seven years of experience in a wastewater treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of a Level II Operator\'s training course. Special Requirements Massachusetts Grade VI Operator\'s License with ability to obtain a Grade VII license within (1) year based on the requirements of 257 CMR. 2.00 and related state licensingrequirements. Valid Driver?s License. Knowledge, Ability and Skill Knowledge. Knowledge of processes and equipment in wastewater treatment and sludge processing. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to wastewater treatment plant operations. Ability. Ability to evaluate and direct plant operation. Ability to react promptly and efficiently to emergencies. Ability to supervise and train workers. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other shift workers. Ability to prepare routine operational reports and maintain records. Ability to plan, direct and coordinate assigned projects. Ability to learn basic computer operation. Skill. Excellent communications skills both oral and written. Physical Requirements Moderate physical effort involved in performing the duties of the job, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching reaching, handling and fingering. Must occasionally move (push, pull, lift or carry) objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Must be able to access all areas of a multi-level facility. Good close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception. Supervision Works under the general direction of the Superintendent of Operations or the Assistant Superintendent of Operations. Performs highly responsible technical and mechanical work requiring the use of some independent judgment in controlling the flow and treatment of wastewater and all related functions of the wastewater treatment facility, pumping stations and other facilities. Supervises one or more full-time operations department employees, depending on the shift. Essential Functions: Responsible for the operation of the treatment facilities to control flow and treatment of wastewater, sludge conditioning, dewatering, and operational maintenance, such as unplugging pumps and grinders. Makes process and operational decisions to ensure proper treatment of wastewater. Supervises operators and facility attendants. Delegates duties in routine and emergency situations. Monitors gage and meter readings, control panels and computer screens. Maintains shift logs and accurate meter and gage readings. Observes and records variations in operating conditions and interprets test results to determine processing requirements. Initiates process changes to ensure sufficient operation of treatment equipment and overall efficient treatment plant operations. Determines causes of malfunctions. Informs appropriate personnel of required repair and participates in, or supervises, operational adjustments. Instructs Operator\'s and Operator\'s Assistants on proper operations and procedures. Responsible for the general cleanliness of the plant, pumping stations, and other facilities. Makes major operational decisions in the absence of management personnel.
