JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Public Safety, this position is responsible for supervision of the department’s work force, and coordination of the day to day operations of his/her assigned shift. The position works to ensure the safety, security and protection of students, employees, and visitors of Hamline University and the facilities and property within its campus. This position will work to resolve problems that go beyond the general scope of assigned duties, or beyond established department protocol: major emergency incidents, rules and regulations interpretation, timely warning notifications, emergency messages, campus policies, state and local statutes and ordinances.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that all policies and procedures are followed, proper notifications are made, and proper documentation is prepared.

  • Schedule staff and ensure safety details are assigned and completed as assigned

  • Maintain uniforms and equipment, found and confiscated property

  • Rotate as an emergency on-call for staff / Cover gaps in staffing when needed

  • Supervise Officers

  • Report review, approval, daily orders, crime log and policy/procedure manual

  • Assist and/or lead the completion of investigations, including the ability to pull video for investigations (CCTV knowledge)

  • Assist in campus crime prevention and educating the campus community on preventing crimes

  • Train new officers

  • Planning, coordination and staffing of special events

  • Assist with accreditation application and maintenance process

  • All other duties as requested

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the: Assistant Director of Safety and Security

This position supervises 3-5 employees.

This position does not supervise student workers.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

● Demonstrated leadership and increased levels of responsibility.

● The ability to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, in a manner that affirms the worth and preserves the dignity of individuals, families, and communities.

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Ability to respond to varied dynamic, stressful incidents and make critical decisions in a timely manner with limited supervision.

● In depth knowledge of Clery, Title IX, MN Sexual Assault Law, NIMS, ICS

● CCTV knowledge

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • An AA degree or equivalent two or more years of public safety experience as staff not student worker

  • A valid driver’s license.

  • Certified in first aid, CPR, AED. (or become certified in the first 90 days of employment)

  • 1+ year experience working with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) or Google Office

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of supervision experience.

  • First Aid, CPR, AED,Clery Certified within the first 90 days of employment

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

● Four year degree in Criminal Justice or similar program

● Security Supervisor experience

● Two years security experience at an institution of higher education.

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Outdoor seasonal extremes, various hazards responding to environmental and medical emergencies, fire alarms, blood borne pathogens, lifting signs and barricades, dangers associated with responding to criminal activity. Ability to walk or stand for 70% of shift, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, kneeling, climbing stairs and carrying equipment.

● This is a full time, 1.0 FTE, exempt position, 12 months a year.
