Job Description

We have a new opportunity for an experienced Legal Counsel to join our Legal Affairs team. Based in Saint-Laurent, this role reports to the Senior Counsel, AbbVie Canada.

As Legal Counsel, you will provide general commercial legal advice and strong counsel to support AbbVie’s businesses. The successful candidate will be expected to rapidly gain knowledge of our industry and business, and be a true partner capable of managing priorities, providing strategic advice, and finding legal solutions to a wide range of complex Canadian matters and global projects. To ensure success, you will need to be confident in managing risk and display strong communication skills, with the ability to navigate legal and regulatory complexities to make comprehensive decisions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead counsel for one or more internal departments (example HR and Government Affairs), pharmaceutical brands, and provide substantive advice to Marketing, Medical Affairs, Trade and Market Access concerning a broad range of legal, regulatory and compliance issues.

  • Provide clear advice to business clients and senior management on Canadian laws and regulations focusing on areas of promotion, patient support, payer access, go-to-market strategies and collaboration models.

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of agreements such as complex commercial agreements, service agreements, pharmacy agreements, consulting agreements and other corporate agreements.

  • Support matters delegated by the Senior Counsel, AbbVie Canada, and work with other US-based or international lawyers within AbbVie on specific matters or projects.

  • Adopt a problem-solving approach and appropriate risk perspective to find legal solutions to a wide range of matters. Advise and resolve standard and complex legal matters in practice area automously.

  • Resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise. Execute core job responsibilities in a timely manner.

  • Help select and direct the work of outside counsel, define and manage project objectives and budget.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally, both at local and global level, and find solutions for business clients consistent with the law, policies/procedures, and AbbVie’s Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

Education / Experience required:

  • Bachelors in law from a recognized university.

  • Licensed to practice law in Canada and a member of the Quebec Bar.

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant legal experience, ideally as part of a global pharmaceutical company.

  • Expertise in various aspects of drug development and local regulations, including pharmaceutical regulatory.

  • General understanding in antitrust and competition law, general corporate and criminal/anti-bribery law, privacy, intellectual property and compliance.

  • Solid knowledge of market access and relevant Canadian legal landscape.
