First State Bank -- Job Description
Job Title: Controller Status: Exempt
Department: Finance and Accounting
Reports To: CFO
Primary Purpose of the JOB:
The Controller is responsible for the accounting function of the bank, assists in the production of financial reports and maintains an adequate system of accounting records and a set of controls and budgets. Ensures that reported results and procedures comply with generally accepted accounting principles, as well as state and federal banking regulations. Prepares and/or supervises preparation of financial statements, call reports, tax provisions, schedules and management reports.
Essential DUTIES:
- Manage daily functions of the Accounting department
- Oversee the accounting operations of the bank, such as its control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements specifically as it relates to financial reporting
- Develop and maintain professional knowledge of and ability to understand and implement banking regulations and GAAP in the banking industry
- Direct the development and monthly review of financials to assure accurate and timely financial reporting
- Prepare the annual report
- Assist in the oversight of outsourced functions
- Ensure that general ledger reconciliations are completed, and outstanding items are cleared in a timely fashion
- Responsible for all accrual entries
- Maintain the chart of accounts
- Assist in the creation of the annual budget and forecasts
- Conduct variance analysis for management and the Board of Directors
- Responsible for maintaining fixed asset and accounts payable records
- Oversee the preparation of the call report and annual financial statements and ensure compliance with GAAP
- Oversee the Allowance for Credit Losses (ACL) and compliance with accounting standards
- Assist with monthly ALM reporting
- Assist in the coordination of information to regulators, external auditors and internal auditors for their periodic reviews
- Manage and train direct reports to maximize productivity, efficiency, and the potential of employees of the company
- Appraise performance and provide recommendations for staff compensation, promotion, and termination, as appropriate.
- Review and provide recommendations for all accounting/financial related policies

Required Experience/SKILLS:
- Experience within the Banking Industry, both in Accounting/Finance and Operations
- Experience with regulatory reporting required for banks
- Managing others and managing workflow to meet specific deadlines
- Five to ten years of progressively more responsible experience
- Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to manage/supervise others effectively
- Experience working with Fiserv software a plus
Required EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance
- Certified Public Accountant or MBA not required, but preferred
