University of Rochester Sr Bioinformatics Analyst in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Steiner laboratory studies the transcriptional and epigenetic control of erythropoiesis. The Bioinformatics analyst would be responsible for analyzing CUT&RUN, CUT&TAG, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq and other high throughput genomics assays. They would assist in the generation and analysis of sequencing data from experimental planning to publication and would work closely with Dr. Steiner and her laboratory and to lead analysis efforts on a wide range of projects. They would also support education related to bioinformatics research for students in the Steiner laboratory. Experience with wet bench preparation of high throughput genomics experiments is preferred but not required.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the generation and management of data from high-throughput sequencing (HTS) projects and other projects that generate and complement data. Perform custom and complex Next Generation Sequencing analyses. This will include active collaborations with faculty, bioinformaticians, and at our institution and others. This includes mentorship of students in the Steiner lab learning bioinformatic analyses

  • Proactively identify and evaluate new software for analysis of data to maintain professional knowledge of current trends and developments in the field and incorporate new methodology seamless into Steiner lab workflows. Assist with maintenance of Steiner lab server.

  • Assist in the design and execution of high throughput sequencing experiments. Address project specific questions regarding analyses or experimental design, as they emerge.

  • Attend Steiner lab meeting, chromatin club, and joint hematopoiesis meetings, participate in discussions, and be included in the rotation of speakers that present data or journal articles.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline such as Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry required.

  • Master's or Doctoral degree preferred.

  • 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Hands-on experience with managing and analyzing large datasets (e.g., NGS data) required.

  • Programming expertise includes proficiency with Linux/UNIX systems and using R/Bioconductor and Python for informatic data analysis required.

  • Experience with data analysis for bioinformatic datasets required.

  • Experience with developing bioinformatics software or R/Bioconductor packages, and building Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) for non- bioinformatics users is desirable required.

  • Skill in organizing and analyzing large datasets required.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems required.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions required.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; knowledge of, and experience with writing peer-reviewed publications preferred.

  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and documented ability for high-level multitasking preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $86,482 - $129,723 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
