$200,000 - $315,000 a year

Description

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) seeks an experienced and dynamic leader for the Senior Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion role. This crucial role provides strategic and thought leadership on issues pertaining to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) for all students, faculty, and staff of the SMD. Serving as the Vice Dean for Equity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer’s primary liaison and proxy at the school, the Senior Associate Dean is a visible leader within SMD, and is responsible for promoting fairness, addressing disparities, and nurturing a culture that values and respects diversity. The ideal candidate combines expertise in medical education and DEIJ with a robust leadership skillset.

Appointment and Reporting Relationships

  • The Senior Associate Dean is appointed by and reports to the SMD Vice Dean for Equity and Inclusion.

  • The following roles report directly to the Senior Associate Dean:

  • Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion for Undergraduate Medical Education

  • Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education

  • The following positions support the Senior Associate Dean’s work and initiatives:

  • Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for URMC Clinical Affiliates

  • Senior Pathway Programs Specialist

  • Pathways Programs Coordinator

  • Director of Bridge Mentorship Program

  • Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion in Research and Research Education

  • Director of Equity and Inclusion for Research and Research Education

  • Administrative Assistant for Equity and Inclusion for Research and Research Education

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

  • In close alignment with the Vice Dean, advances the institution's commitment to diversity and inclusion by implementing strategies, policies, and initiatives aligned with the university's Strategic Plan, fostering a campus culture that celebrates equity and ensures the representation and success of individuals from all backgrounds.

  • Builds and strengthens relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including the Dean/CEO of the Medical Center, Departmental Chairs, and other executive leaders, in support of the Vice Dean for Equity and Inclusion.

  • Draws upon research, scholarship, and information on national and international trends to develop and support innovative programs and processes relevant to medical center diversity and inclusion.

  • Proactively identifies and supports DEIJ-related needs and challenges impacting SMD clinical sites and learning environments.

  • Serves as senior consultant to SMD leaders on emergent and emerging DEIJ topics.

  • Promotes and monitors progress in the recruitment, retention, success, and advancement of faculty, staff, and students who represent diverse populations and groups traditionally marginalized at the institution.

  • Develops and effectively uses communication channels to share DEIJ-related successes and news pertinent to the medical school with, University of Rochester and Rochester community.

  • Conducts data gathering, analysis, and reporting activities and maintains thorough knowledge of regulatory requirements. Monitors and evaluates programmatic effectiveness through quantitative, qualitative, and other methods and engages in continuous performance improvement.

Academic rank and department of the faculty appointment will be commensurate with training and experience, with specific faculty activities defined in negotiation with appointing department

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, DNP, DPharm or equivalent

  • 10 years of relevant experience that includes leadership and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • 2 years of relevant experience leading in an academic medical center environment.

  • Experience and qualifications commensurate with an Associate or Professor appointment at an academic medical institution.

  • Knowledge of trends and issues impacting diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education and health care

  • Effective at managing complex and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional communication (written, oral, presentation) skills with demonstrated proficiency designing and delivering presentations.


  • High level of emotional intelligence, and ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.

The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
