We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist or Engineer to work within our Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) group. The successful candidate will be responsible for independent coordination and project management of experimental packages (aka “targets”) at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) in Rochester, NY.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate the design and acquisition of experimental packages, characterization, and documentation support that enables cutting edge experiments across a wide range of disciplines: physics, astrophysics material science, chemistry in the high energy density (HED) phase space.

  • Interface with experimental staff to determine experimental package and characterization requirements.

  • Closely coordinate with primary and third-party vendors to acquire needed components, potentially seeking out new vendors for novel requests

  • Manage projects and orders mindfully to meet established timetables and concrete deadlines and resolve delivery issues

  • Communicate with on-site technical staff to understand what designs are feasible for assembly and accurately describe the desired finished product

  • Explore novel fabrication techniques using existing equipment to expand capabilities

  • Identify potential equipment to build capability set, and become primary user to support and/or train the larger group

  • Plan and execute activities to ensure successful target availability for scientific experiments.

  • Provide support during the experimental lifetime to see targets from concept through to final use, including all-day shot support with occasional extended hours and/or troubleshooting

  • Document findings, implement solutions, and communicate results to project staff

  • Update record systems for accuracy and content and amend procedures to improve yield, efficiency, and quality of the product.

  • Interface with GA target production staff and experimentalists at LLE to properly assemble and field targets.

  • Assemble and characterize precision fabricated components with nanometer sized features to within micron tolerances using high accuracy assembly and metrology stations.

  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor or Masters degree in a scientific or related discipline and a minimum of two or more years of scientific experience with a Bachelors degree. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education.

  • Must have a solid understanding of engineering/scientific concepts, principles, and theory

  • Strong written and verbal communication, MS Office Suite, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other professionals, to produce appropriate documentation, and to present results to a limited internal audience.

  • Must possess strong time management skills to handle multiple concurrent experiments at varied phases of development

  • Requires strong project management skills to coordinate multiple players both domestically and internationally

  • Must be able to apply the aforementioned scientific knowledge, adapt standard techniques, and utilize the required diagnostics, tools and equipment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Must be able to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.

  • Basic knowledge and awareness of hazardous material safe handling protocols and cleanroom protocols is preferred.

  • Experience with Computer Aided Design software such as SolidWorks and/or VisRad is preferred.

  • Experience with Smartsheet preferred.

  • Must be able to work both independently and on a team, and able to work occasional extended hours as required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
