University of Rochester Respiratory Therapy-ECMO in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Respiratory Therapist - Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) provides extracorporeal life support to Neonatal, Pediatric, and Adult patients who are in cardiac or respiratory failure despite maximal medical therapy independently and is accountable for provision of competent patient care based on established standards. In the absence of ECMO, The Respiratory Therapist ECMO functions as a registered Respiratory Therapist in at least one critical care (Pediatric or Adult) area of the hospital.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for all aspects of monitoring and troubleshooting the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the treatment period. Collaborates with bedside RNs, physicians, and other members of the health care team to coordinate care for these very complex patients.

  2. Responsible for maintaining and performing both clinical and assigned administrative duties as it relates to the Extra Corporeal Life Support (ECLS) program. Provides specialized expertise regarding ECLS and respiratory care to all members of the health care team.

  3. Participates in the education, orientation, and training programs of all respiratory care staff, nursing staff, and physician staff to correspond with JCAHO, ELSO, and ECMO program standards. Participates in performance improvement monitoring activities within the department and interdepartmentally.

  4. All ECMO Specialists will ensure appropriate ECMO pump coverage 24/7. Assists ECMO Coordinator in organizing and implementing policy and procedure. Assist in training and education of ECMO staff (i.e.: emergency drills, other annual competencies). Provide expertise for ECLS transport (internal and external), as necessary. Assist in data collection and data entry.

  5. In the absence of ECMO, the Pediatric ECMO Specialist, functions as a registered Respiratory Therapist in at least one critical care (Pediatric or Adult) area of the hospital. Performs special and complex procedures which include but are not limited to setting up and/or troubleshooting nitric oxide, HFOV, and the MRI ventilator, is able to function independently in the ED (adult and pediatric) and in the OR with a vent and/or nitric oxide. Provides instruction to others on special and complex procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy required.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • 2 years’ experience in Respiratory Care. All incoming ECMO Specialists will be required to successfully complete UR Pediatric ECMO training curriculum within 6 months of hire, prior to working independently required.

  • Proficiency in all ECMO and respiratory care equipment in age specific population. Understanding, recognition, and proficiency in the application of advanced techniques such as bronchoscopy, ECLS, and mixed gas therapy preferred.

  • Proficiency in the care and management of patients during intra-hospital and high acuity inter-hospital transports preferred.

  • New York State license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with current registrations required.

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $40.40 - $52.52 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
