Description

The Psychiatrist provides comprehensive medical and psychiatric care to individuals receiving substance use treatment under the auspices of the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). The role involves the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, including the prescription of medications and the development of individualized treatment plans. Effectively supports ongoing and collaborative communication amongst all program staff, adhering to established agency communication protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assessment and Diagnosis:

  • Performs comprehensive physical and / or psychiatric evaluations which include medical history, psychiatric history, mental status exam.

  • Diagnose psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders based on clinical criteria and patient history.

Treatment Planning:

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans for patients, integrating psychiatric and substance use disorder treatments.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including counselors, clinicians, and primary care providers, to coordinate comprehensive care.

Medication Management:

  • Prescribes medications, treatments, phlebotomy orders and external diagnostic referrals as required to maintain optimal health status of all Patients on case load.

  • Prescribe and manage medications for the treatment of psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders, including but not limited to opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and other co-occurring conditions.

  • Monitor patients' responses to medications, adjusting dosages as necessary to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Therapeutic Interventions:

  • Provide individual and group therapy sessions, focusing on evidence-based therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

  • Consults with the RN in making appropriate referrals and recommendations for services not offered within the facility based on findings of assessments when appropriate.

  • Establishes and implements appropriate interventions while practicing within the area of licensed / certified specialty.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical standards pertaining to psychiatric practice and substance use treatment.

  • Documents all direct medical and psychiatric service activity and prepares progress reports and assessment information as required by regulatory and funding bodies.

Patient Education and Support:

  • Educate patients and their families about substance use disorders, treatment options, and strategies for managing psychiatric symptoms.

  • Provide support and counseling to help patients navigate the challenges of recovery and maintain long-term sobriety.

  • Collaborates with Medical Team to assist in providing and maintaining adequate coverage of On Call responsibilities (overnights, weekends, Holidays) for Behavioral Health Residential services.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with CCFCS medical and clinical teams during regular Case Conferences as required by NYS Dept of Education Licensing regulations.

  • Provides clinical case conference diagnostic data for clinicians and nurses for reporting and interpretation of assessment, diagnosis, formulation, and implementation of individual treatment plans.

  • Participates in relevant Agency meetings, case conferences and/or trainings

  • Actively pursues development of professional competencies related to job role performance through reading, supervision, in-service training and attendance at conferences and workshops.

Qualifications

Education: Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.

Credentials: Board certification in Psychiatry.

Valid medical license to practice in New York State.

DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances.

Experience: Demonstrated experience in treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Experience working within a multidisciplinary team in a clinical setting.

Familiarity with OASAS regulations and standards.

Competencies: Strong diagnostic and clinical skills in psychiatry and addiction medicine.

Proficiency in psychopharmacology and medication management for substance use disorders.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Ability to handle high-stress situations and manage psychiatric emergencies.
