Outreach Specialist, AEOP Internships & Fellowships

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the AEOP Internships and Fellowships application process.

  • Manage the AEOP Internships and Fellowships program email account and phone number, replying to messages in a timely manner with a high level of customer service.

  • Track the onboarding process for all participants.

  • Manage all supplies, procurement, and inventory for the AEOP team. This includes assembly of supply kits and shipping of materials (lab coats, certificates, etc.) to apprentices.

  • Lead the STEM Research Journal administrative process for creation of annual abstract books.

  • Provide support to enrichment workshops, STEM Foundations, speaker series, recruitment at conferences, and coaching participants.

The Outreach Specialist will report to the Assistant Director of AEOP Internships and Fellowships. The successful candidate will hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in STEM, education, or a related field. They will have experience working with students from marginalized groups. The ideal candidate will be a detailed-oriented team player with outstanding customer-service skills and an infectiously positive attitude towards STEM and student development. They will represent RIT and the AEOP professionally at all times.

Required Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience STEM outreach and education (high school and/or undergrad) with a focus on hands-on education and STEM careers.

  • 1-3 years of experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Skills:

  • Outstanding customer service skills

  • Experience in advising or mentoring students

  • Familiarity with STEM educational and career paths

  • Experience in STEM research.

  • Experience in working with people from groups historically underserved in STEM

  • Knowledge of college readiness curriculums, including soft skill and middle skill development.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; must be adept at communicating with audiences of all backgrounds and education levels

  • Outstanding attention to detail

  • Ability to work in spreadsheets

  • Values and supports individual differences. Able to work with diverse populations.

Job Summary:

The Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP, usaeop.com) provides students and teachers a collaborative, cohesive, portfolio of Army-sponsored STEM programs that effectively engage, inspire, and attract the next generation of STEM talent through K though college programs and expose them to Department of Defense (DoD) STEM careers. A member of the Consortium of collaborative organizations working together to support the AEOP and led by Battelle Memorial Institute, RIT is executing the AEOP STEM Internships and Fellowships and leading the AEOP career development effort.

The AEOP Internships and Fellowships program is a DoD-funded, grant-based initiative that helps to address the Nation’s need for a diverse, agile, and highly competent STEM literate talent pool. AEOP provides high school students, undergraduates, graduates, and post-doctoral scientists and engineers with hands-on STEM research opportunities in military and university laboratories across the United States and its Territories. AEOP Internships and Fellowships offer participants the unique opportunity to be mentored and trained by senior Army, Army-sponsored, or university faculty researchers while conducting real-world research.

The AEOP Internships and Fellowships Outreach Specialist will provide support to all aspects of RIT’s AEOP effort.

Please note: This is a one-year position, dependent on availability of grant funds. Occasional evening or weekend hours and travel to AEOP Consortium meetings and events may be required. The position is based out of the RIT K-12 University Center at RIT’s downtown center.
