University of Rochester Occupational Therapist I - Pediatrics Outpatient OT in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Plans and carries out programs of occupational therapy for individuals based on the diagnosis and evaluation of the physician to facilitate rehabilitation of the mentally or physically ill patients.

Career Ladder: The three bands within this position are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals. Occupational Therapist levels and criteria for each level is defined below:

Band I: Entry level Occupational Therapists who are new to URMC who require training as well as regular direct supervision or guidance from a more senior occupational therapist. This generally involves orientation to the Department¿s infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the Occupational Therapist must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance of required tasks of an Occupational Therapist. 100% of time spent on clinical care.

Band II: With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations, and consistently demonstrates initiative to assist in other areas of the department when the need arises. Able to work with student Occupational Therapists as needed. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail in all clinical services including complete documentation. Additional duties may include working on special projects. 100% of time spent on clinical care.

Band III: In addition to the responsibilities of an Occupational Therapist Band Two, responsibility for program or regional coordination. Program coordination includes assisting in supervision, training, compliance, and operations of a sub-program staffed by Occupational Therapists. Regional coordination includes assisting in supervision, training, compliance, and operations of Occupational Therapy programs at satellite locations. May serve as a preceptor in the on-boarding of newly hired Occupational Therapists directly orienting to equipment, routines and procedures, computer programs and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer Occupational Therapists by providing one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the senior Occupational Therapists and Chief. Able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly. Able to represent the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. 90% clinical care and 10% administrative activities for program or regional coordination.

Band Three status minimally requires 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as an Occupational Therapist in a clinical care role with 1 year dedicated to URMC preferred.

Senior: Experienced clinician that meets all Band III criteria plus management/oversight of sub-program within the overall program and/or assists/supports/executes Program Director Management functions as directed by program Chief.

Senior status minimally requires 6 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as an Occupational Therapist in a clinical role with 2 years dedicated to URMC preferred.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Evaluates the patients' functional abilities and disabilities by tests, observations and information provided by family members, physician, nursing staff and others.

  2. Implements treatment programs of therapy involving activities such as exercise, functional activity, self-care tasks, home management tasks, vocational and prevocational skills to help patients regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to their handicaps.

  3. Educates patients and families in self-care technique, home modification, therapeutic exercise and activity, use of equipment and other relevant areas important for patient functioning and wellbeing.

  4. Plans treatment programs of therapy involving activities such as exercise, functional activity, self-care tasks, home management tasks, vocational and prevocational skills to help patients regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to their handicaps.

  5. Communicates with other team members throughout the hospital related to patient progress, therapy recommendations and barriers to discharge.

  6. Maintains required patient and department records.

  7. Keeps abreast of issues and changes in the field by reading and attending professional meetings and seminars.

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of both didactic and clinical requirements and graduation from curriculum approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Occupational Therapy Association required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licensed by New York State required.
