University of Rochester Med Technologist, Cytogenetics in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of Technical Specialist, Supervisor/Director and with the ability to work independently, provides specialized testing and support for the laboratory section. The Technologist performs complex technical assignments, which are broadly outlined and require theoretical insight and interpretation. (S)he exercises a high degree of skill and judgement and an understanding of the principles and methodologies of cytogenetics processing. (S)he is also responsible for instrument maintenance/standardization, daily quality control and adherence to all laboratory/University policies.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Reports to Technical Specialist, Supervisor, and Director. Generally works independently, seeking guidance from supervisor, and/or faculty.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXCERCISED:

May be responsible for limited supervision of laboratory staff.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

All current or future computers and software. All standard office equipment such as telephones, PC’s, Laboratory Information System (LIS) terminal and printers, calculator, copier, printers and fax machines.

RESPOINSIBILITIES:

  1. Primary responsibility is the detailed morphologic microscopic analysis and karyotyping of a variety of specimens including: amniotic fluids and chorionic villus samples, pre-conceptual and pediatric bloods and products of conception. (30%)

  2. Microscopic analysis also includes complex leukemic bone marrows and tumors for the detection of specific chromosome aberrations associated with various kinds of neoplasia. Performs Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) microscope analysis. (30%)

  3. Provides educational support and specialized training within the laboratory section. (10%)

  4. Performs and documents instrument preventative maintenance as scheduled or as needed. (5%)

  5. Performs and documents instrument troubleshooting as needed. (5%)

  6. Record results of patient sample analysis using computer/instrument interface options (i.e. worksheets etc.)(10%)

  7. Adheres to quality control/ quality assurance protocols. (5%)

Other responsibilities and projects as assigned. (5%)

Technologists are required to rotate weekend, holiday and on-call for the Cytogenetics Laboratory and provide back-up coverage for the Tissue Culture/Bench, FISH Bench as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Medical Technology. BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology with an advanced certificate of completion at a NYS designated program. Must be NYS Licensed or eligible for NYS licensure in Clinical Laboratory Technology or a NYS Restricted License in Cytogenetics.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $32.50 - $42.25 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
