Function of Position:
A Camp Teacher is responsible for supporting coordinators, counselors, student teachers, junior counselors, volunteers and campers in the Healthy Hero camp.
Teachers will be responsible for working with campers in small groups in specific areas of study, such as Health and Nutrition, Math, English Language Arts and Music. An ability to implement a lesson plan provided for each subject matter is necessary. Classroom management skills are needed along with the ability to interact positively with elementary school children. Pre and post-testing of students may be required, depending on the subject being taught.
They will be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The incumbent will participate in high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the Healthy Hero Summer Camp program core values. To succeed as a Coordinator, a candidate should be upbeat, decisive and responsible. Candidates must be organized, possess good communication skills and enjoy working with children. Camp Teachers will work closely with all staff and students and serve as a mentor to volunteers and assist them in any issues related to camp duties.
*This is a temporary, grant funded position.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Teach academic content in small group settings.
Implement and support the weekly camp schedule.
Support and participate in a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, music, games, opening and dismissal procedures, swimming, initiatives, math class, ELA classes, music classes, health classes, breakfast, lunch and other events, as assigned.
Identify and report camper behavior issues.
Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
Report concerns of campers' experiences to Camp Leadership.
Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for your campers' safety and location at all times.
Develop an understanding of leadership and skills necessary to be an effective camp counselor.
Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area/body of water, know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
Memorize emergency procedures and enforce all camp rules.
Participate in Camp trainings and orientation.
Ability to take direction from Camp Leadership.
Ability to work well with other staff members of all levels of camp.
Ability to NOT use personal telephone from 8am-4:30pm

Required Qualifications:
One year of experience in the teaching field.
Experience and interest in working with school-aged children
Upon hire, completion of Healthy Hero Camp Orientation and training.
Upbeat, positive and engaging personality.
Interest in working with school aged children.
Ability to assist in the implementation of program activities.
Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks.
Strong age-appropriate organizational and communication skills.
Responsible for complying with all uniform requirements each day
Required Physical Qualifications:
Must have the physical ability to participate in camp activities that include, but are not limited to, hiking, assisting children in shallow water during swimming lessons, team building initiatives, physical games, music class, health, math and ELA class, and various sport activities.
Must be capable of carrying loads of up to 20 pounds and able to traverse uneven terrain without undue exertion.
Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
Perform essential program support to camp activities that may include, but are not limited to the following activities: semi - reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, working overhead, and at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs, and lying on stomach and/or back.
Ability to perform a variety of tasks outdoors in varying climate (heat, wind, humidity, rain).
Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
Additional Information:
Dates of temporary assignment: MCC Healthy Hero Camps operation: June 30, 2025 - August 1, 2025. (Closed July 4, 2025).
Hours: Camp Hours are 7:45am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Salary: $4,000
Additional compensation may be issued if curriculum development work is assigned/completed
