University of Rochester Associate Vice Provost, Data Insights and Institutional Research in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Associate Vice Provost for Data Insights and Institutional Research (AVPDIIR) provides visionary leadership in harnessing the power of data to support decision-making across the University. Oversees the combined offices of Data Insights and Institutional Research (ODIIR), which integrates advanced analytics, reporting, and data management capabilities. Manages the development and implementation of cutting-edge decision support systems, analytical tools, and reporting frameworks. Directs a program that provides information and sound research about the institution's students, faculty, staff, and programs in order to enhance decision making, problem-solving, strategic planning, policy review, and institutional assessment. Executes a forward-thinking, collaborative approach to delivering actionable insights that shape the University's strategic direction. Serves as the principal liaison between the ODIIR and other university offices and external agencies. Empowers stakeholders at all levels with timely, reliable, and incisive information to inform consequential decisions impacting academic affairs, student success, research benchmarks, and institutional effectiveness. Provides day-to-day direction and managerial oversight of the office and its staff. Manages employees, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines staffing needs.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Data Insights Analytics

  • Oversees the planning, execution, and communication of data science projects using cutting-edge methodologies, including predictive modeling and machine learning solutions.

  • Serves as a thought leader in data analytics, introducing innovative approaches and best practices to optimize the University's ability to extract meaningful insights from its data assets.

  • Leverages advanced analytical techniques and data integration to streamline and automate critical administrative workflows. Foster a culture of continuous process improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation (e.g. – research security, communications, etc.).

Data Insights Collaboration

  • Collaborates with senior leaders, faculty, and administrators across the University to identify critical business needs and opportunities where data-driven solutions can create value, facilitate data-informed decision-making, and streamline business processes.

  • Facilitates cross-functional collaboration between university stakeholders and external partners to strategically identify competitive nominations for prestigious awards, rankings, and other initiatives that elevate the institution’s reputation on both national and global scales.

Institutional Research External Reporting

  • Ensures timely and accurate submission to mandated federal, state and accreditation agencies (e.g. - IPEDS, NYSED, NIH/NSF, Middle States).

  • Manages the sharing of record-level and/or confidential data with private/semi-private consortia (e.g. - AAUDE, COFHE, ASEE, AAUP, CGS, NASM and Academic Analytics). Serve as an active voice within these entities when appropriate.

  • With discretion, manages reporting to other agencies (e.g. - CGS, Moody’s, S&P, DAC, NCAA, ABET).

Institutional Research Internal Reporting

  • Provides thought leadership and creative contributions to the University's strategic planning process, including management of key performance indicators (Measures of Success), and detailed school, departmental and program level metrics (Academic Statistical Profile).

  • Leads the University Rankings Team and coordinate college ranking data submissions, including US News Best National Universities & US News Best Graduate Schools, QS & THE World University rankings.

  • Coordinates and maintains public-facing data (e.g. - UR Factbook, Common Dataset, Student Right to Know, etc.).

Management and Operations (20%)

  • Manages a high-performing team of individuals, providing strategic direction, technical guidance, and stewardship that promotes professional development.

  • Manages needs of the staff including, but not limited to: approving hiring decisions, conducting training, providing ongoing supervision, addressing personnel issues and actions, and conducting performance reviews.

  • Partners with University IT and the Data and Decision Support Team to develop and prioritize enhancements to the university’s data infrastructure. Develops comprehensive specifications for new or optimized data sources that empower robust reporting and analytics.

  • Supports the continuous improvement of data reporting capabilities, exploring innovative technologies and methodologies to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and reproducibility of institutional data products, including the development of automated reporting using data virtualizations

  • Partners with data providers (e.g. – Digital Science, Academic Analytics) and serve as the institutional point of contact while maintaining positive working relationships.

  • Serves as the University’s primary representative to AAUDE, specific external federal and state agencies, ranking organizations, and other consortia.

  • Proactively partners with institutional data stewards to establish consistency in data reporting and analysis through introduction of new institutional data systems.

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree or equivalent graduate training or experience in a specialty suited to the assignment required;

  • 10 years of relevant work experience required;

  • Experience working at a managerial level required;

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Experience managing multiple large-scale projects and initiatives with evolving priorities required;

  • Ability to clearly articulate outcomes and results in oral and written forms required;

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, often while handling confidential and sensitive information with integrity and discretion required;

  • Ability to make decisions that blends qualitative and quantitative information required;

  • Experience working in a higher education setting preferred;

  • Experience in data analysis, predictive modeling, and leveraging data to drive strategic decision-making preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $138,736 - $208,083 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
