Job Responsibilities:

Arrange and provide access services for Executive Director of the Deaf Hub

  • Assist with coordinating access services such as securing access for programming (internal and external)

  • Provide support and mentoring for students with their interpreting- and communication-related issues by communicating with conference coordinators how to arrange access, advocating for access provision, and connecting planning committees to interpreting agencies

  • As appropriate, attend and interpret at programming

Support vision of access need provision for trainees and professionals

  • Co-author white papers and publications

  • Present at professional conferences and meetings

  • Educating and advocating for accessibility at training sites

High-level ASL interpreting for research project team meetings and other team and group meetings, scheduled and as they arise

  • Interpret for day-to-day interpreting needs of the Deaf Hub in scheduled and unscheduled meetings

  • Travel to conferences with Deaf Hub personnel occasionally, to ensure access provision by the conference along with interpreting for personnel

High-level ASL interpreting for Deaf Hub meetings and programming to increase number of deaf/hard-of-hearing healthcare professionals, scientists, trainees, and students

  • Interpret for meetings that DHH Deaf Hub faculty attend with internal and external Deaf Hub partners

  • Interpret for presentations and programming with key stakeholders (including governmental representatives) to promote the Deaf Hub led by the Executive Director of the Deaf Hub

Work with Health Care Interpretation program lead to help increase the number of interpreters qualified to work in the biomedical and behavioral science fields

  • Match qualified interpreters with students for shadowing assignments

Engage in relevant professional development activities, along with identifying learning opportunities for Deaf Hub interpreters

Required Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • 3+ years of work and/or internship experience in ASL or Sign Language interpreting.

Skills:

  • Bilingual fluency in American Sign Language, Signed English, and English, and able to communicate comfortably, using wide register across all three languages to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and other professionals, as well as laypeople.

  • Tactful, discreet, mature, professional, and ethical individual with strong interpersonal skills, including establishing and maintaining appropriate professional and personal boundaries.

  • Ability to work effectively with mixed groups of deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people; students, faculty, and program administrators, as well as a host of departments and units that will be involved in running the program.

  • Ability to conduct basic clerical and administrative functions, such as calendaring and greeting visitors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer master’s degree and degrees, minors, or concentrations that relate to relevant competencies, such as ASL or Sign Language Interpreting, ASL/Deaf Studies, Education, and/or Science/Research Disciplines.

  • Prefer at least 1 year of work and/or internship experience interpreting for deaf professionals.

  • Prefer at least 2 years of experience interpreting in science, research, and/or educational/training programs.

  • Prefer 4+ years’ experience coordinating scheduling or working with conferences/organizations to arrange interpretation services.

  • Prefer strong knowledge and understanding of designated interpreting practices.

Deaf Hub: The Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Science Hub (Deaf Hub) aims to improve the healthcare training experience through mentoring students and professionals, to increase universal access in the health system by working with the community of health professionals, and to strive for better health of deaf and hard-of-hearing people informed by research. The Deaf Hub works towards the long-term goal of increasing the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing people entering health care and biomedical science careers.The Deaf Hub achieves its goals in six categories by:

Mentoring deaf and hard-of-hearing students interested in a career in health care or biomedical science.

Supporting the continued success of existing biomedical and healthcare conferences for deaf and hard-of-hearing trainees and professionals.

Providing professional development and training opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Improving the health care and biomedical knowledge and sign language skills of American Sign Language interpreters.

Developing health systems employers' awareness of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals as qualified for a career in health care and biomedical science, including how they can be hired and successfully integrated into the healthcare workforce.

Supporting the dissemination of accessible content to help healthcare professionals work efficiently with their deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Access Manager will be responsible for supporting the vision of the Deaf Hub for training programs and employers recognizing, understanding, and providing the access needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing trainees and professionals. They will do this by educating and advocating for accessibility through various means such as co-authoring publications and giving presentations. They will coordinate access needs and provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting for the Deaf Hub personnel, primarily the Executive Director, as well as deaf and hard of hearing students in training opportunities and programming. The Access Manager is expected to travel to conferences and meetings with the Deaf Hub personnel occasionally, especially for the Executive Director. Reports to the Deaf Hub Executive Director.
