EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently licensed in the state of Indiana as an RN. Maintains this licensure and provides any licensure renewals or changes to Human Resources.
  • Must possess Basic Life Support certification or obtain prior to providing direct patient care. Maintains BLS certification per hospital policy.
  • Must possess and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or be willing to obtain within reasonable time frame.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is preferred.
  • Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, Emotional support (S.T.A.B.L.E.) certification is desirable.
  • Possess a desire and capability for educating nursing staff, patients, and families.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as defined by hospital policy.
  • Ability to adapt to variations in scheduling (including but not limited to overtime, work schedule changes or low census).
  • Must promote teamwork with physicians and personnel in all departments.
  • Supports this institution by following policies and procedures as set forth, participating in hospital activities, promoting good public relations, and demonstrating loyalty and pride in the organization.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Assumes the responsibility of being the highest ranking administrative person in charge of the facility when other higher ranking administrators are not in house.
  • Assists in the monthly scheduling process. Determines adequate staffing coverage on the nursing units is maintained to the best level possible by assessing the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care. Adjusts staffing and assignments appropriately by calling in or sending home staff as deemed necessary.
  • Assumes the responsibility for the direction of patient care, makes immediate administrative decisions for the entire hospital utilizing knowledge of the policies and procedures of the hospital. May contact the Department Director or Chief Nursing Officer for clarification of policies and procedures or consultation on problems as needed.
  • Performs the functions of a professional nurse leader in assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating patient care with an age-specific focus. Is responsible for managing all personnel, staffing, supplies, and equipment on nursing units.
  • Assists the Department Directors in conducting yearly and introductory employee evaluations.
  • Possesses an overall working knowledge of the electronic record to be able to educate, implement, and troubleshoot documentation in the electronic health record. Serves as a resource for all department employees and physicians.
  • Able to implement emergency protocols in the event of an internal or external disaster. Coordinates patient care as necessary and/or as required with other departments such as police, fire, HAZMAT and other emergency services.
  • Updates physician call schedule on network for all nursing departments to utilize.
