Position Summary

The Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin River Falls invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor ( VAP ) of Physics to teach undergraduate courses in introductory physics for the upcoming Fall-Spring 2024-2025 school year. The Physics Department offers a wide range of courses supporting its majors and students from other programs requiring physics. This is a full-time, 9-month, teaching position with a teaching load of 12 CR per semester along with some research and scholarly activity, renewable for a second year. Target salary $50,000-55,000/academic year, plus benefits.

Responsibilities

The 12 CR teaching load per semester is envisioned to involve teaching two sections of Algebra-based Introductory Physics during the Fall and Spring semesters. The VAP will be welcome to engage in the active intellectual community of the Physics Department as well as that of the University at large. The VAP will maintain a schedule that provides reasonable availability to students outside the classroom. There will be no additional service responsibilities. The VAP will not be expected to teach in the summer. Engagement in mentoring undergraduate student projects is encouraged though not required.

The successful candidate will teach two courses of Introductory Physics. During Fall semester, these courses will be identical sections of Algebra-based Introductory Physics for non-physics majors. For one course section in the Fall, the two 50 min sessions per week may meet asynchronously online instead of in-person in the classroom. This first-semester course is focused mostly on mechanics and kinematics. During Spring semester, the courses taught could remain the same as in the Fall or be switched to the second-semester introductory physics course focused on electric and magnetic phenomena, including light, relativity, atomic, and nuclear physics. There is a possibility of teaching an introductory Scientific Programming course for physics/engineering majors, a Conceptual Physics course, and/or a sophomore-level Modern Physics course.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Engineering, or a closely related field, or ABD (all but dissertation) on or before the start date of the Fall semester.

  • Interest in and ability to teach undergraduate introductory physics courses in an active-learning format.

Preferred:

  • Experience in teaching physics in an active learning environment with combined lectures and labs.

  • Experience with student Learning Assistants within an Active-Learning classroom.

  • Interest in and ability to teach undergraduate introductory Scientific Programming or Modern Physics for physics students and/or Conceptual Physics for non-physics students.
