Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pharmacy IV Coordinator shall be responsible for IV drug distribution services, TPN/Chemo order entry functions in the central pharmacy, IV patient medication monitoring, preparation of IV admixtures and sterile products in the IV Admixture area, drug information, IV inventory control, data collection, goal setting, managing Team Member, financial management, and checking the work of various aspects of technicians, performance improvement activities including medication use evaluation, completes direct report performance appraisals, and performs any other job-related duties in the IV Area, as requested by pharmacy management.

Specific responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following: He/she will:

  • Participate in developing, prioritizing and executing site-based action plans, goals, and objectives based on a needs assessment, including an IV 797 & 800 gap analysis.

  • Helps establish and maintain departmental IV policies, procedures, safety, environmental and infection control in the IV area.

  • Provide general and specific education and training to prepare pharmacy staff to be efficient, competent, and to ensure patient safety in the preparation of IV admixtures under 797 Guidelines.

  • Ensures the accurate and aseptic preparation of IV Admixtures, cancer chemotherapy agents, TPN /PPN nutrition solutions, epidurals, PCA, and unit dose syringes.

  • Supervises and/or prepares IV medications with dosage appropriate for the age, weight, disease state of the patient.

  • Manages the work of support personnel to include hiring, scheduling, training, competency, testing, and evaluation.

  • Performs order entry, patient medication assessment, checks dosing regimens, and makes recommendations for appropriate IV therapies.

  • Supervises monthly inspections of the IV area for regulatory and accreditation standards of compliance.

  • Reviews narcotic records and inventory as related to IV Compounding and ordering.

  • Works closely with pharmacy buyer in maintaining optimal par levels, contracted items, supply and ordering needs, using LEAN principles.

  • Works closely with nursing/medical staff on any new procedures/practices/order sets/drug information needed, related to IV medication therapy and enhancing patient outcomes.

  • Develops, revises, updates IV policies, procedures, process & performance improvement and provides medication safety information to the pharmacy department and external departments that are impacted.

  • Facilitates the coordination updating of the orientation materials and process on the IV area for departmental team members.

  • Provides/Oversees the IV Admixture orientation and rotation for the residents and pharmacy students.

  • Participates in adverse drug reaction/ event and med error reporting programs related to IV use.

  • Participates in process improvement activities as assigned in relation to the IV area.

  • Designs and implements specific IV projects as directed by the Director of Pharmacy as related to goals of the department. In addition, will prioritize the implementation of these projects according to the needs and workload of the department.

  • Responsible for the coordination and oversight of all IV competencies/testing and re-training of departmental team members when deemed necessary.

  • Assists Director in data and statistic collection, budget adherence, and variance reports for IV area.

  • Work closely with Pharmacy Director/ ADOP to revise/update/conduct evaluations of job descriptions and competencies related to IV area.

  • This individual shall possess professional and personal characteristics necessary for successfully fulfilling his/her responsibilities. These characteristics include flexibility, attention to detail, initiative, cooperation, a willingness to fill in for other staff, and a commitment to continuing education to upgrade his/her skills in a constantly developing profession. He/she should be knowledgeable about medication preparation, drug therapy review, drug information and utilization relative to all age groups served at and possess capabilities to provide pharmaceutical care for such groups. He/she should manifest good communication and interactive skills, a positive outcomes/results orientation, and the ability to function successfully as a part of interdepartmental and/or multidisciplinary teams. This individual should enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs, workshops, in-services, professional competencies, as well as, current literature that promotes evidence based best practices.

  • Access to patient information may be needed to fulfill the responsibilities of this role. Adherence to HCA confidentiality policies and practices is required.

  • Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.

  • This position reports directly to the Director of Pharmacy Services. He/she works closely with the Henrico Doctors' Hospital ADOP and Clinical Manager to provide quality services all customers. He/she will work closely with the pharmacy team members, nursing managers, unit leaders, physicians, and other departments to promote best practice and enhance patient outcomes

What qualifications you will need:

  • The IV Pharmacy Supervisor must be a graduate of a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council for Pharmaceutical Education and hold current licensure in Virginia. Education and training should include capabilities/competencies to provide pharmaceutical care for patients of all age groups.

  • This position shall have at least years of institutional pharmacy experience and should demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate educational and training skills for al! the areas of the pharmacy facility at which they serve. Additionally, he/she should have past supervisory experience with emphasis in IV 797 & 800 compliance. This person should actively participate in organizations that can enhance job performance. (Ex. ASHP, NITA). This individual shall possess excellent communication skills and analytical and leadership abilities. He/she should demonstrate proficiency in related information systems hardware/software and IV technologies. This individual must possess the ability to balance multiple tasks, projects, requests, meet deadlines and be capable of functioning in highly stressful situations.
