Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pharmacy Technician II contributes to high quality, patient-centered care performing technical tasks vital to the activities of the pharmacy department. Under the supervision of the attending Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician II duties include but are not limited to accurately compounds, fills, labels, and distributes ordered medication according to departmental procedure and federal/state/local regulations. The Pharmacy Technician II maintains the drug inventory and patient records and implements quality checks and performance improvement measures. Such duties include but need not be limited to maintaining patient records; set up, packaging, and labeling medication doses; filling and dispensing routine orders for stock supplies of patient-care areas; refilling and inventorying automated dispensing machines, maintaining inventories of medication supplies; and mixing medications with parenteral fluids. Technicians must function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines with deviation approved by the supervising pharmacist. Organizational relationships include being directly responsible to the Lead Technician, Pharmacist, Clinical Manager, Assistant Director, and Director of Pharmacy.

  • Procures and distributes medications orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment.

  • Processes medication orders or prescriptions, accurately and safely compounds medications and/or IV admixtures in acceptable dosage forms, appropriately packages and dispenses pre-manufactured dosage forms.

  • Uses established policies, procedures, and protocols to fill and label medication orders and prepackage medications.

  • Uses appropriate techniques for storage, preparation, and dispensing of medicinal agents and follows the health system’s policies regarding cart fill, unit dose distribution, automated dispensing, medication preparation and labeling, controlled substances reconciliation, and ensuring that EMT drug kits and medications for code carts are stocked, checked, and ready to be dispensed.

  • Rounds in patient care and ancillary areas per established schedule. Delivers medications and supplies and picks up new orders and medications for return.

  • Dispenses controlled substances with proper documentation, alerts pharmacist of any counting discrepancies or suspected diversions.

  • Assures patient medications have been checked and released by a pharmacist prior to dispensing or delivery.

  • Facilitates optimum service by responding to phone, intercom, and in-person requests and inquiries. Responds to STAT requests promptly.

  • Prepares chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs, parenteral nutrition, sterile eye drops, irrigation solution, and other products per departmental procedures. Adheres to standard precautions for sterility and personal safety.

  • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.

  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies using scheduled and spot inspections. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.

  • Replenishes floor stock medications in automated dispensing systems, emergency kits, crash carts, and surgical kits.

  • Completes work activities through effective management of time, tasks and available resources. Manages own conduct, performance and attitude including time, space and paper, ethics, attendance and punctuality, and customer focus.

  • Enters charges and credits for patient medications promptly and accurately.

  • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation; files documentation in appropriate locations.

  • Keeps pharmacy areas and equipment clean, neat, and well organized.

  • Assists in all areas of the pharmacy as needed, including specialty areas.

  • Works independently on projects and needs of the departments with minimal oversight.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”

What qualifications you will need:

  • IV room experience in a hospital setting or infusion setting

  • (Internal ASHP education/training modules)

  • Required

  • 1+ years experience as a pharmacy tech

  • Preferred

  • 3 months+ experience in product compounding

  • Preferred

  • Virginia Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration or Virginia Board of Pharmacy Intern Registration (while actively in pharmacy school). Required

  • ASHP Sterile Preparation Institutional Training Certification or Similar. Preferred
