Where the team fits in

The Platform and Data Group is a cross-cutting technology hub, our customers are the technology teams across REA. Essential Services and Operations sits in Platform and Data and is a strongly aligned services team that supports the REA business across Infrastructure, Platform and Data aspects of technology.

We provide service, support, create platform products and tools that help the teams get their work done, including:

  • Streaming data capabilities & Event Driven Architecture at REA.

  • Developer Platform Tooling for multiple cloud providers

  • SRE and platform observability tooling

  • Monitor, support, and improve the technology landscape for REA generally, including maintenance and cost savings.

What the role is all about

This is not a typical Senior Data Engineer role. While it involves hands on technical work and the technical ability to directly support large areas of REA and their data journey, the successful candidate will be comfortable to consult with the business to understand what and how they need to move forward on their data journey. This role will involve a high level of collaboration and consultation with both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels to help them uplift the wider businesses’ data capability. You will:

  • Collaborate closely with your partner team to assess and grow their data maturity in accordance with platform standards, and data management frameworks and practices.

  • Support data management practices development and federation by representing the ‘Voice of the Business’

  • Writing, testing and documenting code according to REA Engineering standards and practices

  • Design, build, test, deploy and maintain platform software and systems using a variety of technologies and disciplines

  • Contribute to platform and product initiatives

  • Collaborating on solution designs and technical problems

  • Supporting less experienced team members

  • Maintaining existing platform products and services, including bug fixes and "Business as Usual" feature enhancements.

  • Support production systems

  • Our team is distributed across four Australian states. You will be comfortable collaborating remotely and continuously looking for ways to improve our ways of working.

  • Contribute to strong technical and engineering practices in the team

  • Review and give feedback on pool requests and engineering documentation

Who we’re looking for

  • Someone with 5+ years of hands-on experience in the industry, working in some or all of software engineering, data engineering, and platform engineering

  • Working knowledge across various data management functions, including data governance, metadata management, data quality management, master data management, data modelling, data design, and data security

  • Someone passionate about data technologies, services, and platforms

  • A great communicator who loves collaborating with stakeholders and the tech community to build the best fit-for-purpose products

  • Someone who looks at tricky situations through a solutions-focused lens

  • Experience with modern software engineering practices, including test driven development, CI/CD, and DevOps

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and Cloud technologies

  • Experience with or exposure to Platform Engineering concepts, such as developer tooling and experiences

  • Experience working with real-time and streaming data frameworks, such as Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Flink is highly desirable

  • Experience with Python, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation and CDK is highly desirable

  • Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering is highly desirable

  • Experience with or knowledge of Event Driven Architecture (EDA), or real-time and streaming data systems is highly desirable
