Pacific Northwest National Laboratory NMR Electronics Technician in Richland, Washington

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

As an NMR Electronics Technician on the Instrument Development and Automation Laboratory team, you will join a talented, highly technological team which is made up of engineers and technicians who develop novel, cutting-edge software, and hardware tools for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) and PNNL. The team has significant instrument development and troubleshooting experience with several state-of-art instruments including but not limited to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. The position requires a close collaboration between scientists who use NMR capabilities for their research and our engineering team.

  • Conducts research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized, under technical supervision.

  • Operates in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes and with specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research.

  • NMR and helium liquefier maintenance, troubleshooting, minor repairs and modifications.

  • Helium liquefier operation and monitoring.

  • Liquid helium and nitrogen (cryogen) fills.

  • Managing cryogen orders, storage, and documentation.

  • Ensuring appropriate safety practices are adhered to.

  • Collaborate with scientists and vendors to solve issues on instruments.

  • Communicating with internal scientists across PNNL directorates regarding fill schedules, planned maintenance, and repair progress.

  • Documenting work instructions and issue resolutions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and 8 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • Technical Institute Graduate/relevant AA degree and 6 years of relevant experience -OR-

  • BS/BA or higher in science or engineering and 4 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining and repairing electronic systems e.g., telecommunication devices, control systems, radio stations, Citizen Band (CB) radios.

  • Experience with complex mechanical systems.

  • Familiarity with basic component parts and concepts: microcontrollers, radio frequency generators and transceivers (e.g., HAM Radio), digital control systems.

  • Ability to use pressure and vacuum gauges, oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers and have good electromechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to work within a 3 Tesla (30K Gauss) magnetic field. Selected candidate must be able to pass a screening for implanted magnetic particles which can interact with the magnetic field.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Required exposure to magnetic fields up to 3 Tesla (30K Gauss).

Work with cryogens (liquid nitrogen and helium).

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
