Pacific Northwest National Laboratory High School HSSBI - ARM Facility Intern [Academic] in Richland, Washington

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber sophomore or junior high school students for intern assignments within the High School Student Business Intern (HS SBI) program. This internship provides an opportunity for high school students interested in business careers to work during the academic year with a mentor in a specified business area. Students attend regular classes in their school for half a day and work up to four hours a day, five days each week at the Laboratory. Students must be part of a required work-based learning class. HS SBI is a 36-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for academic cohort will be August 27, 2024.

The Earth & Biological Sciences Division (EBSD) is looking to add a High School Business Intern to our support team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across the breadth of the division’s staff and projects by way of providing support to group and division administrators. Duties include managing emails and action items, coordinating travel, creating spreadsheets and presentations, procurement, and assisting in the onboarding new staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application.

  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date.

  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidate should have completed business and/or communications coursework that will enable a basic level of solid business communications skills (phone, email, use of professional language in communication).

  • Basic MS Office Suite skills (Outlook and Excel skills will be preferred)

  • While no existing database skills are necessary, interest in basic database functions/maintenance, business systems, and records management are preferred for this position.

  • Strong organization and task-tracking skills

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
