Medtronic UX/HF Engineering Manager in Rice Creek, Minnesota

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:.

Leadership:

  • Lead a human-centered design team of User Experience (UX) Researchers, UX Designers, Human Factors (HF) Design Engineers, and Clinical Engineers

  • Drive adoption and growth of UX best practices and thinking throughout the organization while maintaining excellence in HF and quality compliance aspects of usability

  • Foster a culture of acting boldly, competing to win, moving with speed and decisiveness, fostering belonging, and delivering results the right way.

  • Provide strong coaching and mentorship to support the growth of team members on meeting/exceeding performance and career expectations and defined objectives.

  • Identify opportunities to elevate individual contributors and foster their career growth

  • Maintain 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development

  • Play a crucial role in hiring and onboarding team members

  • Champion an evidence-guided, customer-centered, especially patient-centered, approach in all design solutions.

  • Review plans, direct, and implement all aspects of the company’s design and development of new, regulated, medical-device products or medical-software systems as well as non-regulated, digital solutions from initial concept to final market release

Process:

  • Manage the HF staff across the usability engineering file documentation, development of user and workplace profiles and use scenarios, task analysis, requirements specification, user interface design, usability testing, user error analysis and submission report

  • Aid team members with the prioritization of project work as well as functional initiatives, including defining key performance indicators

  • Foster connections between team members to optimize development efficiencies

  • Exercise latitude and independence with received tasks and objectives from direct supervisor and business leaders

  • Estimate and plan project work, including resource levels, budget, and schedule

  • Manage user study schedule to meet business timelines and project needs, delivering on user needs

  • Organize the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery

  • Monitor documentation maintenance throughout all phases of R&D and often signs-off as functional leader on quality documents

  • Ensure that all medical device or medical software designs meet and even exceed regulatory and standards guidance on usability (e.g., FDA guidance or IEC 62366)

  • Mange team capacity and resources to ensure efficient and effective product development processes

  • Manage budgets, schedules, and team performance

Design and Development:

  • Provide critical feedback on schedule, design, and scope to ensure work is delivered consistently across the team

  • Foster connections between team members to optimize development efficiencies

  • Work closely with other departments (e.g., marketing, project management, systems) to drive innovation and ensure a cohesive product experience.

  • Support maintenance of the UI design system to maximize consistency across the enterprise solutions and design efficiency.

  • Support individual contributors in collaborating with stakeholders to understand business requirements and incorporate feedback into the design process.

  • Drive innovation within the design team (e.g. workshops, investigation of new tools or methods, advocacy for “space to dream”) and contribute to the overall innovation culture of the organization.

  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in design to bring fresh insights to the team.

  • Provide human-centered design expertise for product development programs

  • Provide critical feedback on schedule, design, and scope to ensure work is delivered consistently across the team

  • Provide critical design review throughout the development lifecycle to ensure solutions align with user needs

  • Refine and augment metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of design solutions and iterations based on data-driven insights.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in a technically related field required

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in HFE, usability engineering, UX research, UX design, User interface design, Industrial design or biomedical engineering with extensive human factors coursework

  • Knowledge of medical device industry and the application of HF usability engineering principles and tools in the design, development and evaluation of hardware and software products brought to market

  • 2+ years of experience in the designing of digital products and leading UX delivery from ideation to delivery

  • Experience with design requirements development and structure

  • Product Risk Assessment and Risk Management Experience (user error analysis, user failure mode effect analysis or user-related risk assessments)

  • Collaboration experience with Marketing, Product Strategists, Product Owners, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Software, and/or Biomedical Design Engineers

  • High aptitude for driving cultural change, ability to multi-task continuously, and execute on strategic initiatives

  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance and develop comprehensive plans and solutions to complex issues

  • Strong negotiation, conflict management and influence management skills

  • Product development experience (concept to market release)

  • Familiarity with International Standards and regulatory guidances applicable to medical devices, such as FDA Guidance, IEC 62366, ISO 14708-1 or IEC 60601

  • Experience with diverse technology platforms, including digital systems, electromechanical systems, implantables with patient-facing external controller/instruments, mobile applications or software as a service (SAAS)

  • Previous work experience or internships in the medical domains
