Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Innovation, this is a lead engineer position where the applicant will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the BD R&D portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing key project deliverables, which includes generating creative design solutions to complex technical problems. A deep mechanical engineering experience along with a professional background in medical device design is required. The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of engineering design, computational modelling, analytical techniques, biology, and human physiology to solve multidisciplinary biomedical problems. Program management skills and communication to internal and external stakeholders are required.

The Staff Engineer must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs.

Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)

  • Apply mechanical engineering theoretical principles and techniques to understand, develop, and design innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.

  • Drive technical research to understand customer and clinical needs, develop insights and recommendations through scientific literature review, technology landscaping, and ethnographic research.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to develop and evaluate technology solutions that address prioritized unmet needs.

  • Translate clinical needs into device requirements, system architectures, and realistic and actionable design plans.

  • Design, fabricate device embodiments for use in concept usability/simulated use studies.

  • Identify the best tools and approaches to develop/optimize device and system designs using an appropriate mix of first principles / analytical, computational, and experimental methods.

  • Demonstrate excellent understanding of medical device product development including risk management methodologies.

  • Develop and execute test methods and implement data acquisition systems, assembly methods, tooling, equipment, and processes for devices intended for bench, ex vivo, preclinical and simulated use evaluations.

  • Lead and conduct data and statistical analysis efforts of experimental results to generate conclusions and drive project direction.

  • Communicate relevant project information effectively (verbal and written) including project status, technical concepts and design details, and functional demonstrations to key internal and external stakeholders of varying technical abilities.

  • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to junior engineers and team members

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in engineering (mechanical preferred) or related field is required. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Experience: PhD + 4 years of relevant industry experience, MS + 7 years of relevant industry experience, or BS + 10 years of relevant industry experience is required

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Required:

  • Experience serving as an engineering lead to conceptualize, design, and develop medical devices that address clinical needs.

  • Knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical device systems and design fundamentals: (e.g. Solidworks or equivalent to create 3D engineering models, common manufacturing processes (additive/subtractive, injection molding), tolerance stack analysis, design for manufacturing, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

  • Ability to translate critical performance criteria into a study strategy.

  • Ability to design, oversee, and conduct scientific experiments to inform design selection and effectively analyze, interpret, report, and present experimental results.

  • Experience designing and building test and data acquisition systems that measure physical parameters (e.g. pressure, force, flow, etc.) to enable performance evaluations of device concepts.

  • Working knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, LabVIEW) and experience with data analysis, signal processing, statistics, and technical writing.

  • Experience identifying key technical risks associated with design and/or performance of device concepts.

  • Experience leading and effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams with ability to adapt quickly to program changes.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Preferred skills:

  • Experience with data collection, use of sensors (e.g. force, pressure, flow, etc.) to collect data from test systems and concept devices.

  • Research experience with ex vivo and in vivo animal models to characterize concept design performance.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

  • Use of statistical software packages for analyzing datasets

  • Digital and medical image processing and analysis

  • Experience working with a stage-gated product development process under a quality system.

Work Environment: (if applicable)

The candidate is expected to work in a research lab environment and may require working with chemicals, and biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.) via ex vivo/in vivo models.
