Job Description Summary

The Senior Engineer will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on new drug delivery systems and development of interventional medical devices. Reporting to the Associate Director of Innovation, this is a technical position where the engineer will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the BD R&D portfolio.

The candidate will be responsible for providing mechanical and biomaterials engineering support through the development and testing of medical device design solutions and materials interfacing with tissue and drug formulations. The Senior Engineer must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs.

Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)

  • Execute experimental studies to characterize novel tissue and drug interfacing biomaterials.

  • Contribute to development and conduct of scientific studies (benchtop, in vitro, ex vivo, and/or in vivo) to characterize concept device performance.

  • Utilize mechanical engineering principles to support the development of medical device components, assemblies, and test systems (3D Solidworks models, fixtures).

  • Author/review protocols/work instructions, test/project reports, and other documents as required to execute studies in the laboratory and compile, analyze, and interpret data from experimental results.

  • Prepare solutions, reagents, or media using standard techniques including calculations, mass balance, and pipetting.

  • Participate in product design, technical reviews, and brainstorming sessions.

  • Provide clear communication (verbal and written) to key stakeholders of varying technical abilities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to develop technology solutions and initiate studies that address prioritized unmet needs.

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related field is required. Advanced degree is preferred.

  • Experience: PhD, MS + 2 years of relevant industry experience, or BS + 4 years of relevant industry experience is required

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Required:

  • Strong working knowledge of Biomaterials Science (e.g. polymer materials and vehicles including fabrication, biomaterial-tissue interfaces and foreign body reaction).

  • Experience with material characterization analytic techniques

  • Demonstrated experience with bench/in vitro experimental design conduct, results interpretation, and presentation.

  • Experience with data analysis, signal processing, statistics, and technical writing

  • Able to work both independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Critical thinking, active listening, and strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to adapt quickly to program changes and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Preferred skills:

  • Experience with data collection, use of sensors (e.g. force, pressure, flow, etc.) to collect data from test systems and concept devices.

  • Research experience with ex vivo and in vivo animal models to characterize concept design performance.

  • CAD design skills (SolidWorks or equivalent) to generate 3D models and drawings of device concepts and test fixtures.

  • Prior experience with prototype characterization techniques (surface profilometry, microscopy, 3D scanning, etc.)

  • Prior experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab, LabVIEW)

  • General knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

  • Use of statistical packages for analyzing datasets

  • Digital and Medical Image processing and analysis

Work Environment: (if applicable)

The candidate is expected to work in a research lab environment and may require working with chemicals, and biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.) via ex vivo/in vivo models.
