Curia Environmental Health & Safety Specialist in Rensselaer, New York

Curia provides global contract research and manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will plan, coordinate and lead the application of site health and safety programs. Areas of responsibility include health and safety program design and implementation, training, inspections, industrial hygiene, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis and management reporting. This role must establish and promote a safe and healthy work environment and assure compliance with government safety regulations. Some travel is required as well as being able to work on shifts when necessary to deliver training, attend meetings, cover start-ups, etc.

Essential job duties

  • Oversee and/or implement site health and safety programs including industrial hygiene, hazard communication, confined space entry, hot work, emergency response, electrical safety, lock out/tag out procedures, bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan, asbestos, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, industrial toxicology, contractor safety, ergonomics, personal protective equipment, and laboratory hygiene plan

  • Plan, organize and schedule safety related training. Develop and deliver effective, applicable course materials for safety training to Curia employees, contractors and applicable business partners

  • Active member of the emergency response team developing, maintaining and conducting training and exercises for emergency response.

  • Fulfilling role of Incident Commander for emergency responses.

  • Lead and/or facilitate employee teams including safety committees and incident investigation

  • Maintain the site OSHA logs

  • Understand and oversee potent compound handling safety and industrial hygiene. Develop and/or coordinate implementation and/or continuous improvement of the required components of the potent compound control banding system

  • Help guide the potent compound team in understanding and implementing best practices in the industry

  • Oversee and conduct medical program case management and be responsible for coordinating modified work for restricted work activities of employees

  • Coordinate annual medical surveillance and qualification program for respirator wearers, emergency response teams and potent compound monitoring

  • Coordinate development of SDS for Curia products

  • Conduct all job responsibilities in a manner consistent with all applicable safety and environmental laws and regulations, company policies and procedures and Curia commitment to continuously improve safety and environmental performance

  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to safety equipment (i.e. eyewashes, safety showers, etc.)

  • Provide cross functional support for all EHS programs.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or related field or a combination of experience and degree.

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience administering industrial health and safety programs

Preferred

  • Experience in a plant or facility that has an extensive HAZCOM Program

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Must have a good understanding of OSHA Regulations

  • Familiarity with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) including Permitting and Compliance

  • PSM Familiarity also desired

  • Industrial Hygiene training

  • Working knowledge of product safety and workers’ compensation program management

  • Understanding of potent compound handling and control banding

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and effective training skills

  • Must have adequate computer/software skills – MS Office, etc.

Pay Range: $62,000-77,385
