Caris Life Sciences VP - Global Biopharma Business Development Lead in Remote, Wyoming
Position Summary :
This business development and life sciences leader(s) will be accountable for the search and evaluation of new partnering opportunities with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other external partners, as well as leading the most promising opportunities through contract and deal execution. Biopharma and Business Development (BBD) is a critical focus of the company, which will expand the growing line of oncology business for Caris by leveraging the company’s leading technologies molecular science, laboratory and bioinformatic platforms, and drug development enhancing capabilities. This leader will be a thought partner to BBD leadership and meaningful contributor to the BioPharma strategy that will position Caris as the unequivocal molecular and precision medicine partner of choice for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry.
We seek experienced business development professionals with strong scientific oncology acumen and an understanding of how medicines are discovered, developed, and commercialized. The candidate must be able to speak to how molecular science intercalates with and brings value to oncology therapeutic pipelines and should bring extensive experience partnering with BioPharma organizations including the cultivation and leveraging of relationships across the industry to ultimately drive value for the business. The incumbent will understand the unique capabilities of Caris, and in a tailored manner, will position those capabilities to address real-world needs for decision-makers within oncology pharma and biotech in their efforts to enhance research and development activities, identify novel targets, expand existing indications, perform diagnostic testing, improve commercial efficiency, and accelerate clinical trial accrual and success.
Job Responsibilities
These successful leader(s) will join and bring to the Caris team a diverse mix of experience and expertise, including a deep knowledge of diagnostics and/or the drug development continuum including early research, development, medical and commercialization and, along with a substantial set of pharmaceutical industry business contacts to build a robust business channel.
The incumbent(s) will work internally with the company’s scientific and business leadership to define and package the products and services that could be made available to the life sciences industry, assess the competitive and partner landscape, then will position those capabilities and data sets for deal terms that account for the highly valuable commercial and scientific insights they will provide. Individual will build out, prioritize, and lead a book of work, before seamlessly transferring executed deals to the alliance management team.
The incumbent(s) will bring a substantial business development track record and expertise in targeting pharmaceutical institutions to lead the full spectrum of S&E through contracting efforts with partners. In some cases, alliance or partner experience with extensive BioPharma interactions and deep knowledge of the BioPharma industry will be considered for candidates with less direct BD experience. In all cases, this individual will be expected to have an existing cadre of biopharma contacts including those with decision making authority. Caris’ BBD team engages Biopharma contacts across a wide range of departments or company functions, and the incumbent will ideally have connectivity to individuals across several of these departments, including but not limited to Discovery, Early/Late Development, Biomarkers, Translational Medicine, Precision Medicine, Clinical, Companion Diagnostics, Medical and Commercial organizations.
This full cycle business development professional will drive partner outreach through multiple channels including small meetings and larger partnering events, prepare and present materials for high quality external interactions, and lead internal cross-functional evaluation of opportunities. In this capacity, the individual will internally leverage the extensive cross-functional capabilities of the company’s scientific leadership, laboratory capabilities, bioinformatics, information technology, legal, medical affairs, and related resources to refine and deliver executed contracts. The BBD portfolio, product experience, geographic and Biopharma company-specific coverage model will reflect the geographic location and individual backgrounds of the BBD Lead hires.
Required Qualifications:
A minimum of 12+ years professional work experience, with at least 8 years in Biopharma business development roles or as a S&E Lead at a biopharmaceutical company.
Business DevelopmentProven business development track record (deal sheet) leading diligences, and complex organization-wide efforts to deliver partnerships with Biopharma.
Transactions knowledge (contracting, deal sheets, multi-tier / multi-constituent decision making, etc.).
Experience as the external face of the organization, leading and participating in BD partnering events (e.g., JPM, BIO) and oncology conferences.
BioPharma and Precision MedicineExtensive knowledge of the research and development business processes within pharma with clarity about prioritized targets, call points, internal decision-maker constituents, and related insights.
A deep understanding of (e.g., scientifically) and/or experience partnering on oncology products, companion diagnostics, next generation sequencing, therapeutic assets, real-world data and real-world evidence programs, and/or clinical trial enrollment related products / services to pharma and biotech is critical.
Experience in molecular biology, with knowledge of drug discovery and development processes, and/or diagnostics and platforms preferred.
Expertise across biopharma value chain with a strong understanding of the drug development continuum including early research, development, medical and commercialization.
Preferred Qualifications
MBA and/or MD or PhD strongly preferred.
Exceptional business and interpersonal skills.
Project management orientation, which will be extensively leveraged as the selected incumbent assesses client requirements and drives internal efforts to match Caris’ capabilities responsive to those requirements.
A motivated, goal-orientated individual who can organize a large number of projects (Book of Work) and prioritize the most critical and visible projects.
Ability to prepare clear materials such as documents, presentations, and other communication tools for both internal (e.g., evaluation and leadership presentation activities) and external facing activities (e.g., pitch decks).
Given the growth projections of this channel, incumbent will bring an entrepreneurial orientation characterized by pragmatism, independence, self-determination, high intellect, and an agile, flexible behavior style.
A professional outward and attitude, with superior oral/written communication skills, including strong negotiation skills.
Team player- willing to raise the tide for the team and deliver organizational goals through collaboration.
Prior experience leading successful matrixed and direct reporting teams is ideal.
Proven experience in sales and/or marketing and managing relationships with partners.

This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Job may require after-hours response to emergency issues.
Periodically scheduled on-call may require after-hours response for technical emergencies not explicitly related to assigned job responsibilities.
At times may be required to work weekends/holidays.
Up to 30% travel may be required.
Annual Hiring Range
$280,000 - $320,000
Actual compensation offer to candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level. The pay ratio between base pay and target incentive (if applicable) will be finalized at offer.
