The primary role of Manager, Software Engineering, for the LEAP (Learning & Active Perception) team is to serve as functional manager for a group of approximately forty engineers. LEAP is part of AV’s MacCready Works (MW) business unit and is focused on customer-funded research & development of computer vision, perception, autonomy, and related technologies; a majority of the team has backgrounds in computer science & engineering but also includes aerospace, mechanical, electrical, and related engineering disciplines. The Engineering Manager will work with Program Managers, Directors, MW Leadership, and other stakeholders across the company to support resource planning, budget management, and team development.
Manages a team of engineers including budget and staff planning, training, performance evaluation, and career development
Attracts and maintains high-caliber talent, providing appropriate mentorship and growth opportunities
Functional management duties include, but are not limited to:
Collaborates with Program Managers to creates and periodically review resource plans
Reviews timecards, expense reports, service tickets, and other requests requiring manager approval
Coordinates the goal setting and performance review process, gathers feedback from employees’ project leads and/or peers as required, and addresses any performance issues
Works with human resources and other partners to support employees in personal matters (e.g., benefits, parental leave, bereavement)
Collaborates with Program Managers to support the planning, coordination, and execution of engineering development projects
Regularly interacts with project leads, customers, and/or functional peer group managers, normally involving matters between functional areas
Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, and staffing plans; interacts with senior management as required

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline required, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
5+ years of experience as individual contributor to software engineering projects
2+ years in a supervisory role and successfully managing a technical team, preferably in software engineering or closely related discipline
2+ years of experience managing projects, whether as technical leader or in a project management role
Must be a US Citizen, willing to work on government contracts, and have the ability to hold at minimum a DoD Secret security clearance
Experience with MS Office tools required, experience with other productivity and/or project management tools is a plus

Advanced degree or certifications are a plus but not required

Skilled at identifying, communicating, and mitigating technical risks and issues
