Lilly Senior Director, Counsel – Litigation, Legal Policy & Strategy in Remote, Indiana

The Senior Director, Counsel – Litigation, Legal Policy & Strategy role is for a creative, curious, and strategic litigation attorney with impeccable judgment. The role will have a strong focus on affirmative litigation and other advocacy. This role will foster a legal and administrative environment that supports innovation and patient access to the medicines they need. This individual will be energized by a complex and evolving legal and regulatory environment that impacts the legal, compliance, and business challenges facing biopharmaceutical manufacturers. We’re seeking a collaborative professional who can effectively partner across legal and business functions, engaging with external collaborators as needed. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President and Assistant General Counsel for Litigation, Government Investigations, Legal Policy & Strategy, this role plays a critical part in our legal team.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategy, manage, and provide advice to senior leadership and the business on litigation and other legal strategies related to emerging laws, regulations, and industry trends.

  • Provide legal counsel to Government Affairs, Communications, Regulatory Affairs and other functions related to legal policy and strategy priorities and litigation, including assistance drafting and reviewing communications, comment letters, and related materials.

  • Lead outside counsel, including the development and management of reasonable budgets; coordinate internal efforts to meet litigation requirements and deliver results within the established budgets.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key Lilly constituencies.

  • Engage with key external collaborators, including counterparts at other companies in the industry, key government agencies, trade associations, and outside policy and counsel network to ensure Lilly’s legal policy interests are aligned and advanced.

  • Review, analyze, and keep current on litigation and policy developments affecting the pharmaceutical industry.

Basic Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree with an active license to practice law in the United States

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney developing and driving strategy for complex litigation, including constitutional claims, statutory and regulatory challenges, and APA matters.

Additional Preference:

  • Significant experience (8+ years) managing complex litigation at a global company and/or top law firm.

  • Appellate experience, including a clerkship on a federal court of appeals.

  • Experience litigating class actions, matters involving state and federal healthcare programs (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, 340B), and fraud and abuse laws (e.g., Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act).

  • Experience handling litigation within the pharmaceutical or other highly regulated industry.

  • Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in working with senior leadership.

  • Good judgment and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to influence others.

  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately handle highly confidential information.

  • Demonstrated dedication to expand knowledge and adapt to a changing environment.

Additional Information:

Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $168,000 – $246,400 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
