Applied Research Associates, Inc. Analytical Explosives Chemist in Redstone Arsenal, Alabama

The Engineering Science Division (ESD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking an Analytical Explosives Chemist/Technician. ARA’s Engineering Science Division provides research, development, test and evaluation services to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The successful candidate for this position will support the DHS Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Detection Technology Center (DTC) at Redstone Arsenal, AL.

Responsibilities

  • Support all explosive and contraband research at DTC, including development of test methods and test plans for analytical equipment, and employing analytical chemistry to develop methods for quantitative instrumental chemical analysis.

  • Support development of test plans, reports, presentations, standard operating procedures and other support documentation.

  • Follow and update existing, or develop new, standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Maintain qualification in chemical, radiation, and laser safety, and explosive handling as mandated by the facility procedures and training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry with related experience or associate's degree in a scientific discipline with 2 years of related experience or a high school diploma/GED with 4 years of related experience.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, team oriented, detail oriented, and customer focused.

  • Experience with MS Office applications.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain a Security Clearance and DHS Suitability.

  • Sole US Citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using the following techniques and equipment: Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Particle Size Analysis, IR and Raman Spectroscopy, Various Titrations, General Laboratory Best Practices.

  • Active TOP SECRET Clearance.

  • DHS Suitability.
