Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. ​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​The Fundamentals team focusses on several "service-wide aspects" of this fast-growing service, taking it to the next levels of quality, reliability and release velocity. Imagine building an autonomous and scalable engineering and test systems to take every change through the full quality pipeline and on the end customers worldwide. Imagine implementing the framework for auto-detecting service outages, auto-communicating to impacted customers and auto-mitigating the issue leveraging AI/ML based platforms. These are just a couple of the scenarios. The focus areas of this team span service monitoring/alerting/auto-mitigation platforms, service and customer focused measurement/reporting platforms, live site management and supportability tooling systems, engineering systems, release velocity and management, security/compliance, etc. The team will be driving initiatives that will drastically improve the quality, reliability, and efficiency of the "whole service" in the above areas and in turn help the wider product team and the end customers.

In this role, you will internally partner with all the feature and component teams of the service and help them adopt and/or deliver to these focus areas and related goals using the platform/solutions that your team builds. You will act as the point of contact for all Azure wide initiatives/integrations for the service and drive them internally in the team. You have the opportunity to drive architecture evolution of the service for better reliability, scale and COGS.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to work with a team of experienced engineers in Redmond. The Senior Software Engineer role would be responsible for delivering success in the above-mentioned areas by partnering closely with the counterparts in IDC, the feature teams, the customer support team, leadership team, other sister teams in Azure Data and partner teams in Azure.

The candidate should also have experience handling service-wide problems like live site management, engineering systems, customer support etc. From a technical point of view, familiarity with database systems and engineering systems is a plus. Familiarity with Azure and Azure Data services is a plus.

Responsibilities

​​Working with a team of software engineers to design, develop, test, and deploy high quality cloud services using agile methodologies and best practices.

Providing technical guidance, feedback, and mentorship to your team members and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and customer focus

Partnering with other teams across Azure and Microsoft to onboard to common initiatives and adopt best practices from other teams.

Managing the operational excellence, security, reliability, and scalability of the Azure PostgreSQL service.

Qualifications

Required /Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Track record of managing cross-functional / cross-time zone teams.

  • Experience in building / managing Control/Data plane for distributed services.

  • Experience with PostgreSQL database

  • Experience in managing services based on Linux ecosystem.

  • Experience handling service wide problems like live site management, engineering systems, customer support etc.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
