​​Azure Databases SQL Customer Success Engineering is looking for a Senior Engineering Architect who is passionate about the entire Microsoft Data Platform and its potential to enable transformational change at our customers. Azure Database Services are proven cornerstones of many of our largest customers data landscapes. We are helping accelerate customers largest projects in new and exciting areas such as AI and data analytics as well as enabling further scalability and optimization of traditional transactional workloads. In this role, you’ll be helping our customers drive vital transformational data projects and working alongside our customers, partners and Microsoft’s various field, sales, and engineering teams to assist in these opportunities as well as directly white-gloving complex and strategic SQL Server, Oracle and OSS database workload modernizations. In this role you will also be directly contributing back to the continuous development cycle in our core database services by bringing the learnings and observations gathered in these complex engagements back to our wider product teams in order to drive important product development.

The Azure Databases SQL Customer Success Engineering team is highly collaborative, data-oriented, and greatly values diversity of thought and ideas. We have a proven track record of delivering deep technical engagements with our customers and helping unblock and accelerate complex data migrations from major RDBMS environments such as SQL Server, db2, Sybase and Oracle to Azure SQL or Azure PostgreSQL.

Responsibilities

Promote and position yourself as a leading SQL Server and Azure SQL Subject Matter Expert through engaging in PoCs, pilots and complex projects as well as driving performance tuning and optimization for acute troubleshooting scenarios.

  • Work closely with both generalist and specialist solution architects to mentor and evangelize Azure Data services as well as engage in engagements where engineering assistance is required for modernization projects.

  • Work with feature PMs and Software Engineers from other Azure Database teams to improve our products and services by finding and suggesting well-researched improvements and taking charge of driving these changes when needed.

  • Document and share learnings and technical best practices / insights within engineering as well as the wider architect community and contribute to key engineering activities such as telemetry, code and design specification reviews.

  • Advise on best practice architectures for data relevant solutions and execute quick technical feasibility and proposals for moving identified workloads to Azure Data Platform.

  • Ensure security is front and center of all architecture proposals and work as well as a cornerstone of all custom developed IPs and solutions.​

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 4+ years of relevant experience in the area of SQL Server/Azure SQL

  • Or equivalent work experience

  • 4+ years of enterprise-scale data migration experience from SQL technologies, starting from project scoping to data/app migration and final certification and post-migration optimizations.​

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 8+ years of relevant experience in the area of SQL Server/Azure SQL

  • Or equivalent experience.

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years enterprise-scale data migration experience from SQL technologies, starting from project scoping to data/app migration and final certification and post-migration optimizations.​

  • Or equivalent work experience

  • Knowledge of other data technologies from other cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, IBM and Oracle Clouds as well as other emerging technologies such as Vector Databases, RAG or New/NoSQL.

  • Proficiency in C# and .NET framework.

  • Demonstrated technical thought leadership in customer facing situations.

  • Ability to drive deep internal engineering conversations on potential strategy toward improving our Azure Data Services and own this input end to end.

  • Enterprise-scale data migration experience from Oracle technologies, starting from project scoping to data/app migration and final certification and post-migration performance tuning.

  • Fluent knowledge of how customers assess, purchase and manage their public cloud solutions.

  • Ability to connect technology with measurable business value.

  • Demonstrated technical thought leadership in customer facing situations.

  • Self-driven ability to deliver on ambiguous technical challenges with incomplete data.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
