Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. Azure Cosmos DB is Microsoft’s next generation globally distributed, massively scalable, multi-model cloud database service. It is designed to enable developers to build planet-scale applications. We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer who is passionate about cloud databases and who likes taking data driven decisions and building innovative solutions to support the business growth. You will be responsible for designing and building reliable, high-performance, low-latency solutions for Cosmos DB services at scale. You will work across the stack and collaborate with engineers on the team to convert vision into a high quality, shipped product.

Responsibilities

  • Drive strategy and execution to improve efficiency and density of the Cosmos DB service working with technical leaders in Cosmos DB and Azure Data.

  • Lead efforts and discussions for the architecture of aspects of products/solutions. Create proposals for architecture and design documents, and lead testing of hypotheses and proposed solutions. Share and act on findings from investigations, own design decisions, and oversee the early in careers team members.

  • Lead efforts to apply knowledge of debugging and profiling tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods, and lead verification of assumptions through writing and developing code proactively before issues occur and reactively as issues occur across products.

  • Leverage subject-matter expertise of cross-product features with appropriate stakeholders to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items.

  • Mentor less experienced engineers to help them reach their utmost potential.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • In-depth understanding of distributed systems and/or Operating System internals is highly preferred.

  • 6+ years of professional experience shipping high-performance C/C++ or C#/Java software.

  • Proven track record in designing and delivering quality software.

  • Excellence in software engineering practices, coding and solid foundation in data structures, algorithms with proficient debugging and analytical skills.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • Drive to improve performance, availability and supportability of services.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
