Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington

The One Engineering System (1ES) team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer passionate about improving software engineering tools, increasing developer productivity, and positively affecting development culture.

Our immediate customers are Microsoft engineers, who always look to deliver better code and work faster. We develop and operate a set of engineering tools and services including build tools, languages and services, verification services including test execution and code review tools, engineering reporting and data analysis and machine learning services. All working towards a unified engineering system for internal Microsoft needs. Our services are used by tens of thousands of developers and we build and test millions of projects daily in a distributed service running at scale in multiple data centers across the world.

Responsibilities

This is a Principal Software Engineer role with executive visibility and opportunity for advancement. You will have an opportunity to set the architectural direction, reason about priorities and create collaborative agreements about the ordering of work while maintaining good relationships with partner teams. There is lots of cross-group work, so you’ll need to be proficient at building and maintaining warm and productive working relationships with other teams. There is a massive stream of telemtry and regular investigations of bugs, so familiarity with debugging and telemetry analysis will be helpful. There are deep technical challenges running systems at our scale, so a background in distributed systems and large-scale services would help you get productive fast. Above all, it is important that you show empathy for customers, be sensitive to their needs, have good instincts for crafting a scalable and reliable tools and services and are proficient at guiding teams to deliver a phenomenal user experience.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience building development productivity tools, libraries and systems

  • 3+ years experience with engineering tools on either Windows, Linux and/or MacOS

  • 2+ years experience with large scale data and caching models

  • Coding, debugging, algorithm design, and problem solving skills

  • Background in aspects of software engineering, development lifecycles, and data analytics

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
