We are the Skype Core Services team responsible for delivering mission critical services to provide client applications access to multitude of Office 365 Core Services including our Intelligent Conversation and Communications Cloud.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will be building resilient, highly scalable, highly available and highly performant services that leverage state of the art technologies to deliver the next gen collaboration and teamwork experiences. Responsibilities

  • Drive architecture process across the organization, incl. communicating across geo-distributed diverse teams and creating forums for wider engineering audience to share and collect feedback on specific architectural challenges.

  • Lead identification of dependencies, development of design documents for the product, application, service or platform and leadthe identification of other teams and technologies that will be leveraged, how they will interact, and when one's own system may provide support to others.

  • Identify best practices and coding patterns and provide deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy. Creates and applies metrics to drive the quality and stability of code, as well as appropriate coding patterns and best practices.

  • Leverage subject-matter expertise of cross-product features with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items. Breaks down long-term project vision into milestones as part of an overall roadmap.

  • Ensure engineering solutions meet all requirements including performance, resiliency, privacy, security, and compliance.

  • Ensure architectures are scalable not only in terms of traffic but also in terms of engineering organization implementing the architecture so that growing geo-distributed teams can work in parallel on addressing the business requirements with high efficiency and good developer experience.

  • Lead by example and mentorothers to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products.Work across the broader organization to drive reusability and alignment, identify opportunities to simplify and standardize our solutions to reduce complexity, improve performance, efficiency, effectiveness, and return on investment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years of experience working on large scale cloud applications, distributed systems, and backend development.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Passion in designing and building large-scale distributed systems

  • Experience working with Kubernetes or Service Fabric a plus

  • Analytical skills with a systematic and structured approach to software design.

  • Passion for building highly scalable, reliable services.

  • Experience working across teams and divisions, communicating technical details clearly across organizational boundaries and with a history of building partnerships between groups.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
