Microsoft Corporation Principal Hardware/Software Engineer and Tech Lead in Redmond, Washington

We are looking to hire a Principal Hardware/Software Engineer and Tech Lead You will be responsible for partnering with the team, for pathfinding and development of the system architecture and engineering aspects SmartNIC (Network Interface Card) /DPUs (Data Processing Unit)/accelerators to deliver leading-edge capabilities for Azure’s global customers. The work includes system architectural design of SmartNICs, specifically defining the overall system architecture, the interface between hardware and software, the interface between the SmartNIC and the server/rack and switches, driving alignment with other teams in Microsoft, and collaborating closely with other architects focused on future datacenter designs.

This is a tech lead role with substantial technical responsibilities that require deep technical understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Tech-lead that can work on a small but yethigh performing architecture team.

  • Help drive thearchitecture of future SmartNICs, including the hardware/software interface, targeting the three-to-seven-year timeframe.

  • Drive how SmartNICs interface with the server, the rack, and switches.

  • Simulate,incubate, and prototype system technologies to demonstratetheir viability.

  • Collaborate with various partner teams in Microsoft (Azure Cloud, Microsoft Research, OS (Operating System)/Hyper-V software, Hardware design, etc.), especially to ensure end-to-end software-hardware system solutions.

  • Potential participation in industry standard bodies to drive emerging technologies relevant to the system engineering aspects of disaggregated system architectures. 

  • Engage with Azure’s supplier ecosystem on collaborations that deliver on the above charter.

  • You will collaborate closely with system engineers and architects in the Azure services team.

  • You will work with various software development teams across Microsoft’s online properties, and engineering teams at external silicon and systems vendors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 12+ years of experience in system architecture for infrastructure components (SmartNICs, switches, etc.), with demonstratedtrack record of success.

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 5+ year's experience leading significant projects.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred:

  • 18+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 15+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 7+ years of people management experience

  • Simulation experience.

  • Experience in PCIe ( Peripheral Component Interconnect Express )/CXL (Computer Express Link) , Ethernet, or both. FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) development experience.

  • Skilled in partnering and influencing system engineers, computer architects, hardware design engineers and executives. 

  • Experience leading and driving complex projects with respect and integrity including those with multiple workstreams spanning different business and technical disciplines. 

  • Intellectual curiosity and always curious about learning and deploying new technologies. 

  • Problem-solving skills, analytical capabilities, and attention to detail. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 

  • Background in computer and systems architecture, with thorough understanding of system software (OS, Drivers, Firmware) and its interaction with the hardware platform. 

Hardware Engineering M6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
