Ford Motor Company Materials Applications Process Automation Engineer in Redford, Michigan

The Materials Applications Process Automation area is an emerging field that is required to support the evolving Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing strategy and deployment of the global manufacturing footprint. This specific manufacturing area has a direct impact on the highly integrated battery manufacturing processes, e-driveline manufacturing processes and vehicle assembly manufacturing processes that span across the entire Electric Vehicle Portfolio (BEV/PHEV/FHEV).

As a Manufacturing Engineer within the Manufacturing Technology Development (MTD) organization, your role will be to lead the development of the processes, tooling, equipment and manufacturing engineering standards that will be focused on the following key manufacturing technology development areas within Materials Applications Process Automation:

  1. Materials Surface Treatment

  2. Materials Liquid Dispensing and Inspection

  3. Materials Heating and Cooling Treatment

  4. Materials Transfer Molding

Applications developed within these manufacturing technology areas will be used extensively within the EV manufacturing processes being deployed globally at Powertrain Operation (PTO) and Vehicle Operation (VO) manufacturing facilities.

  • Collaborate with key Product Design (PD) and Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) stakeholders to identify, define and prioritize manufacturing technology development initiatives aligned to global manufacturing objectives:

  • Establish and cascade the Current State/Future State manufacturing strategy road maps for the manufacturing technology development area of Materials Applications Process Automation.

  • Benchmark best practices and processes (internal/external), follow industry trends and emerging technologies.

  • Drive the manufacturing technology development and establish the technical core competency base within the organization for the specific manufacturing area of Materials Applications Process Automation including the following:

  1. Materials Surface Treatment Methods;

  2. Laser, Plasma and other surface material treatment methods.

  3. Materials Liquid Dispensing and Inspection Methods;

  4. Thermally Conductive Materials – Thermal Interface Materials

  5. Sealing Materials – Liquid Dispensed Gaskets, Expanding Foams

  6. Bonding Materials – Liquid Dispensed Adhesives

  7. Materials Heating and Cooling Treatment Methods;

  8. Induction Heating, Liquid/Gaseous Cooling and other whole material treatment methods.

  9. Materials Transfer Molding Methods;

  10. Thermosetting Materials – Part Fixation/Potting

  • Lead internal Ford and external Supplier cross functional teams to develop and deliver the new manufacturing technologies through ideation, concept generation, design, build and testing of prototype tooling and equipment:

  • Adhere to the organization’s established and disciplined manufacturing technology development procedure in the execution and delivery of these new manufacturing technologies into the global manufacturing facilities.

  • Apply a system engineering approach with Six Sigma methodology and data driven mindset on all manufacturing technology development projects to validate the process robustness prior to production implementation.

  • Develop facility floor space and layout requirements at both Ford and non-Ford facilities – plan, schedule and lead the installation of the Materials Applications Process Automation prototype tooling and equipment at these facilities:

  • Interface with MTD, UAW and Supplier Partners for testing and prove-out of prototype tooling and equipment.

  • Coordinate manufacturing technology development project activities and balance travel as needed to complete tasks effectively leveraging a flexible work schedule between Ford on-site, Supplier on-site and remote off-site locations.

  • Manage all aspects of the manufacturing technology development projects portfolio administration inclusive of:

  • Budget forecasts, project funding submissions, supplier quote solicitation, purchase order placement, invoice processing and financial check book accounting.

  • Prepare clear and concise technical and strategic packages for presentation, review and approval at the peer, cross-team, cross-organizational and Senior Leadership levels. Grow, secure and protect company intellectual property.

  • Create core technology documentation and upload to information share sites to facilitate knowledge transfer to Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) personnel and support technology replications across global manufacturing sites.

  • Participate actively in the mentoring, coaching and learning cascade activities across the manufacturing engineering teams and serve as an advocate to foster a manufacturing innovation culture across the enterprise.

  • Demonstrate initiative, capability, success and personal development within this role for growth into a potential future promotional advancement into a recognized corporate leadership Technical Specialist Position in this technical area.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline.

  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong leadership, motivation and team building skills.

  • Exceptional project management, multi-tasking and organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a dynamic collaborative team setting.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to convey engineering and technical information with ease.

  • Adept with Digital 3D/Simulation Tools and Methods – AutoCAD, 3DX, CATIA, Siemens TeamCenter.

  • Proficient with the entire suite of Microsoft Office applications and tools.

Preferred Requirements

  • Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline.

  • Foundational education and knowledge in the field of materials applications for EV manufacturing processes.

  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment with focus on production related process automation.

  • Familiarity with new program planning, implementation, launch deliverables and plant support requirements.

  • Demonstrated success with production implementations focused on materials applications process automation.

  • Exposure interacting with Senior Leadership Teams across Manufacturing, Product Design and Manufacturing Sites.

  • Expertise in Data Analysis Methods and Statistical Process Control and/or Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.
