The Opportunity:

Intermediate Design & Drafting Technologist, Highways & Roads , to join our Transportation Engineering Department located at our Red Deer office. Reporting to the department manager, this position will be responsible for assisting senior engineering staff in the design and drafting of transportation engineering projects.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Processing of project base map and survey information including setting up all project base map and creation of the existing ground DTM and conversion of project data between various coordinate systems as required.

  • Prepare simple to complex preliminary and detailed design drawings including plans, profiles, typical cross-sections, geometrics, drainage and utilities, right-of-way, spot elevations, signing and pavement markings, detours and construction staging.

  • Work closely with design engineers/project engineers/project managers to complete design and working drawings for both construction and post-construction phases.

  • Ensuring highway and road designs and drawings incorporate all pertinent design features tailored toward easy understanding by end users.

  • Contribute to the cost-effective, proper and timely production of transportation engineering and drawings that meet all client and approval agency requirements, and design standards.

  • Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering plans and drawings based on project requirements using AutoCAD / Civil 3D platform.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Civil Engineering or Design and Drafting Technology/Technician diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and a Minimum of 5 years of roadway and highway engineering design and drafting experience.

  • Working knowledge of transportation engineering principles and design standards such as Alberta Transportation Design Standards, TAC Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads and Alberta Municipalities (MD & Counties).

  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the application of computer-aided design/drafting programs including AutoCAD and Civil 3D (Bentley MicroStation experience is considered an asset).

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to generate high-quality work.

  • Ability to work both individually and as a team member in a high pace environment.

  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
