COUNTY OF BERKS Facilities Support Mechanic in READING, Pennsylvania

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs skilled, semi-skilled, and routine maintenance related tasks.  Works in teams and independently with little supervision in the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds.  This position may lead and instruct maintenance employees with lesser training and/or skills. May be required to serve in an on-call capacity. Employees in this class may be assigned varied tasks as needed. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the general maintenance and upkeep of the facilities, buildings, and grounds that do not require a trades license.
  • Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance tasks on equipment such as, but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and grounds maintenance equipment. 
  • Assists in construction and renovation projects throughout the County, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and grounds maintenance. 
  • Perform custodial tasks.
  • Maintains the functionality and distribution of materials received at the loading dock.
  • Assembles, repairs, maintains, and moves wall fixtures, furniture, desks, cabinets, tables, chairs, shelves, and related fittings and fixtures.
  • Ability to operate snow removal equipment, including but not limited to snowplows, snow throwers, salters, and loaders
  • Ability to operate lawn mowing equipment to maintain County property as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certification from a recognized issuing agency.
  • Completion of accredited trades training course at the apprentice level or the equivalent in related training and experience.
  • Minimum two (2) or more years' experience as a building maintenance worker.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • General Knowledge of at least one trade (plumbing, electricity, carpentry, HVAC, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the building trades terminology, tools, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to self motivate.
  • Ability to analyze problems.
  • Ability to adhere to all County policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with the general public and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to utilize computer programs and software. 
  • Knowledge of the safe use of mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance principles and practices.
  • Ability to consistently meet assigned deadlines.
  • Possession of valid Pennsylvania driver's license required. 
  • Physical presence is required.
  • Ability to handle stress

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Capable of repetitive pulling, pushing, kneeling, climbing, squatting, stooping, and bending for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs
  • Able to work extended shift(s) during a Facilities Emergency.
  • The incumbent must be able to operate County vehicles and equipment. 
  • Work may be performed at heights in excess of 15' from grade and involve the use of a ladder, scaffolding, and/or bucket trucks.      Rooftop work may also be required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following safety precautions.
  • Work involves exposure to unusual elements, such as varying temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, small spaces, and loud noises
