We take pride in the work we do and think you will too. Right now, our Ordinance Systems team is hiring for an experienced Research and Development Engineer.

BAE Systems is looking for a highly motivated engineer/scientist to lead process and product development activities at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. This position would be taking a lead on a variety of projects in our Research and Development (R&D) group including transitioning new materials to production as well as formulating new propellants.

We believe in work-life balance and this position works a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. This position can be on-site or hybrid on-site.

As a Senior Research and Development Engineer, you will work with scientists and engineers to design and develop new propellants and new propellant manufacturing processes for commercial and government use. Prior experiencing working with energetics such as nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, RDX, HMX and plasticizers is highly desired.

Interested candidates should exhibit sound judgment, initiative and self-motivation, and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision. Solid communication, teamwork and integration skills will be required to work effectively across functions at multiple levels. The ability to manage time effectively while dealing with a variety of issues in a dynamic environment will be key to the success of this individual.

As an Aerospace Engineer in our Rocket Development team, you will:

  • Design, analyze, build, and test rocket motors for aerospace and defense applications.

  • Lead development programs and support other programs with design and analysis.

  • Size motors, grains and nozzles

  • Develop estimates of rocket motor performance

  • Design mechanical motor components, including motor cases, propellant grain and nozzles

  • Select and implement equipment for motor and component testing

  • Predict motor performance using computer simulations

  • Perform design optimization analyses

  • Use internally developed and commercially available codes to perform computer-aided analyses

  • Perform computational fluid dynamics on internal motor flows and external plumes

  • Perform thermal analysis on composite insulators and motor structural components

  • Perform finite element structural analysis on composite and metal components

  • Assess design and test risks using quantitative risk assessment methods

  • Present technical work products to peers, senior leadership and external customers

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related scientific / mathematical field. Must have completed coursework in physics and differential equations

  • 2 years experience in engineering design and analysis. We would also consider scoping down this position for a recent college grad without experience.

  • Experience with CAD software (e.g. Autodesk, Solidworks, Pro-Engineer, etc.)

  • Experience with computer programming such as C#, C , or Python

  • Able to think critically and work creatively

  • Good understanding ofthermodynamics and/or fluid dynamics

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • 7 or more years of relevant experience in engineering.

  • Experience in propellant / energetics formulating, pressing, manufacturing and/or ballistic results.

  • Experience with computer aided design modeling to analyze structural design, thermal effects, stress and stimuli, vibration, fatigue, etc.

  • Established defense industry knowledge and network.

  • Experience with interpreting and adhering to government military specifications.

  • Strong safety knowledge including hazard identification and knowledge of safety processes.

  • Strong project management skills and experience.

  • Knowledge of WBS and application.

  • Ability to work well in team environment.

  • Strong customer focus.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $81500 - $138600

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
