Radford University Assistant Professor - Geology in Radford, Virginia

Job Summary:

The Department of Geology at Radford University invites applications for a tenure-track teaching and research position in Geology at the rank of Assistant Professor to start Fall 2024. We seek candidates who are committed to the teacher-scholar model. The Geology Department offers concentrations in Engineering and Environmental Geosciences, General Geology, and Earth Sciences (teacher preparation) and has a strong focus on outstanding undergraduate teaching in small classes. Faculty are expected to maintain an active research program that includes undergraduate student participation and mentoring. Faculty also contribute to university, college, and departmental service.

Teaching responsibilities may include upper-level undergraduate classes for geology majors in the candidate’s area of expertise and introductory classes for non-majors. We seek candidates with a broad range of expertise, but special consideration will be given to those with experience in the environmental and engineering geology specialty with practical experience in tools such as unmanned aerial vehicles and GIS . Secondary areas of need are in igneous and metamorphic petrology and structural geology.

Required Qualifications:

Required qualifications include a Ph.D in geology or related field, completed before August 2024. Previous teaching experience, for example – as an Assistant Professor, Instructor/Lecturer, or GTA is required. Additional considerations may include post-doctoral and/or industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Our department is looking for candidates who:

• have experience in or are able to teach courses in engineering and environmental geology and/or uncrewed aerial systems and bring complementary experience to the department; certification in FAA -part 107 is preferred but not necessary;

• have experience and/or interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning;

• are committed to a teacher-scholar model, demonstrate the potential for outstanding teaching with a diverse student body, and maintain a productive research program with a commitment to mentoring undergraduate students.
