POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY. In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States. More than half are first-generation college students. Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid. Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in a 2017 Stanford University study. LaGuardia Community College's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment by identifying, evaluating, and mitigating harmful conditions and practices. The EHS Office also ensures that college operations are conducted in compliance with CUNY policies, City, State, and Federal regulations of environmental and occupational safety. A wide range of services are provided by the department which includes, but are not limited to, developing safety policies and programs, inspecting campus laboratories, workshops and other applicable areas for compliance. Conducting training and information sessions for faculty and staff for applicable health and safety topics will also be an important role for this position. The successful candidate reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and will assist in overseeing shop safety and EHS compliance along with the following duties:

-Conduct routine, formal safety inspections of assigned areas and ensure shop and user safety;

-Coordinate with faculty and staff regarding activities related to procedural and regulatory compliance;

  • Respond to reportable incidents, with manager oversite, by investigating and submitting formal reports;

-Coordinate with faculty and staff to monitor procurement and use of materials, equipment and services;

  • Communicate and coordinate with pre-approved vendors as necessary to ensure shop safety and compliance;

-Maintain and ensure shop inventory is up-to-date;

-Assist with development, coordination and facilitation of compliance training and inspections;

-Assist with the review, update and enforcement of the Shop Safety and Environmental Compliance Plans;

-Generate formal reports of actions taken to prevent or correct safety violations and EHS compliance.

-Coordinate with applicable personnel to ensure machines, tools and equipment in a shop space are maintained and operated as per applicable regulations.

-Represent the EHS office at various stakeholder meetings and report back relevant information.

-Move, lift and transport equipment and materials as needed

-Availability to work some weekends and/or nights when deemed necessary by the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related fields is a plus

  • Previous experience managing a maker space, 3D printers and Laser cutters preferred

  • Previous holders of necessary FDNY and NYCDOH certifications for a fabrication or makerspace is a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English

  • Experience in using and maintaining various machines, equipment commonly found in a fabrication lab

  • Experience in using design software (e.g., CAD software, CURA, etc.) related to the job

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs at a time for short distances

  • Coordinates waste disposal programs by communicating with faculty and staff, organizing collection and contacting appropriate disposal vendors.

  • Assists in delivering various training programs and in maintaining bulletins, web site, and other communications.

  • May assist with routine inspections of laboratories, storage rooms, and work stations; may coordinate passive monitoring programs

  • Coordinates purchases, manages inventory, and provides for maintenance of specialized department equipment

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary $65,946 - $70,541
