We are excited to invite a passionate and experienced Education Specialist to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an experienced Education Specialist for our Families w/ Children facility in the Jamaica area of Queens, NY. As the Education Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in our organization in supporting the quality of an afterschool program that promotes academic achievement while also providing a fun and safe space for New York City’s most vulnerable kids. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.

Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create recreational and academic curriculum/lesson plans that supports NYC DOE school-day curriculum

  • Promote positive impactful learning with program participants.

  • Infuse STEM based learning in lesson plans and e nsure all structured activities have clearly defined outcomes (measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for participants).

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with parents, school administrators and personnel.

  • Responsible for recruiting program participants within Family Residence and Community

  • Monitor/track daily attendance and create attendance initiatives as needed

  • Lead activities with program participants virtually and in-person.

  • Nurture a fun/ safe environment within classroom.

  • Participate in staff meetings, conferences, and trainings

  • Perform other duties and tasks assigned by Afterschool Director

  • Will be responsible for supporting the compliance and operations of the program

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field

  • Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development and implementation of structured programming.

  • Has worked in an afterschool / recreational setting for at least two years.

  • Kind, creative, flexible, and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the afterschool program staff team.

  • Sensitivity and awareness while working youth experiencing temporary housing.

  • Must be willing to undergo a multi-stage background investigation which includes employment history and criminal background check.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred
