Department Summary

MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center is one of the government’s largest R&D resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering a comprehensive spectrum of capabilities, spanning the full development lifecycle from prototyping (concept and user-centered design), through software architecture & modeling, agile development, testing and deployment, to software assessments (verification & validation). We are looking for creative and experienced Senior / Lead Software Engineers, with a passion to work on innovative, advanced approaches and technologies to help our nation solve its most critical challenges within one or more of the following domains:

  • Safety Critical Software

  • Cyber Security

  • Industrial DevOps

  • Embedded Systems

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Play a trusted technical leadership role in helping the Missile Defense Agency and the Navy apply modern software engineering methods and design patterns to mission critical systems.

  • Provide deep subject matter expertise and/or lead software design and development efforts of real-time, safety-critical software systems, ensuring compliance with Missile Defense Agency and Navy standards and best practices.

  • Work with system and safety engineers to develop and maintain safety and security cases, ensuring evidence is created to support certification and regulatory approvals.

  • Guide and mentor the engineering team in the adoption and implementation of DevSecOps practices for cyber-physical systems, fostering a culture of continuous integration, testing, and security.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, quality assurance, and security, to deliver high-quality software solutions.

  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in real-time and safety-critical software development, as well as security and DevSecOps practices.

  • Work closely with the sponsor to help guide the work, identify new areas or challenges for MITRE to assist with, and work with the greater MITRE team for reach back, research, and collaboration to further enable the sponsor’s ability to meet their software system goals and provide impact to the sponsor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically, requires a minimum of 5 years of experience of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field; or a 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret clearance

  • Strong knowledge of software design patterns, safety and security standards, and best practices.

  • Experience working with certification bodies and building safety and security cases for software certification.

  • Proven experience with DevSecOps methods and practices, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, automated testing, and security integration.

  • Deep understanding of software development processes, tools, and methodologies.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems and provide innovative solutions.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and guide a team of engineers.

  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Typically, requires a minimum of 8 years of experience of related experience with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field; or a 6 years and a Master’s degree; or PHD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on real-time and safety-critical systems.

  • Active Secret Clearance

  • Experience in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, or industrial control systems is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with related initiatives within MDA and Navy: MDA Digital Transformation, Project OVERMATCH, FORGE & OVERMATCH Software Armory (OSA)
