Description of Job

The Study Abroad Coordinator oversees the Exchange Visitor Program (J-1 Visas), study abroad, National Student Exchange, and supports study-away opportunities for students. The Coordinator works closely with other on-campus units to advise and support the international student and scholar community. This position leads preparation and dissemination of pre-arrival information for all incoming international exchange students and scholars. Develops and implements logistics for international students’ and scholars’ arrival and orientation and manages the international orientation budget. Responsibilities of this position include serving as an Alternate Responsible Officer (RO) for the university, promoting study abroad opportunities to students, managing student exchange agreements, and providing support for international students and scholars through advising on immigration issues and navigating campus resources. Additional responsibilities include creating promotional materials, updating the study abroad webpage, coordinating study abroad fairs, and supporting programming for international students and scholars. The Coordinator will assist the Assistant Dean with managing budgets and assessment data for study abroad programs.

Primary Duties:

Study Abroad and National Student Exchange (NSE)

  • Advise students on study abroad programs, policies, and regulations, including conveying information on admission requirements, registration procedures, and transfer credit practices.

  • Facilitate programs and activities, including outreach efforts related to the study abroad fair and pre-departure orientation, organization of student events, coordination with related campus departments and partner organizations, marketing of programs, reporting on statistics, etc.

  • Collaborate and communicate with appropriate departments and partner organizations.

  • Review and maintain partner exchange agreements.

  • Serve as liaison with partner institutions and study abroad providers.

  • Keep updates on health and risk management issues for study abroad program destinations.

  • Serve as NSE Coordinator.

  • Promote NSE opportunities to students.

  • Participate in annual NSE conference and other events.

International Student and Scholar Support

  • Provide guidance for international students and scholars on maintaining status and resolving issues related to J and F visa processes.

  • Support international students with onboarding and retention initiatives. Refer students to appropriate on and off campus resources.

  • In collaboration with other staff in The Center, coordinate and support international student orientation.

  • Coordinate and support programming and educational events/activities for international students and scholars.

  • Create and disseminate pre-arrival information for international students and scholars.

Exchange Visitor Program and SEVIS System Access

  • Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and maintain records in SEVIS for J-1 Students and Scholars.

  • Along with other staff, serve as Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 student programs.

  • Support SEVIS processes and procedures for international students and scholars including issuing DS-2019, updating SEVIS records, and providing travel signatures.

  • Complete SEVIS program annual reports.

Administrative Support

  • Promote programs through speaking engagements and participating in professional organizations. Produce communications such as newsletters, web content, brochures, and social media.

  • Maintain student records and program files.

  • Compile monthly and annual reports including assessment data related to study abroad and national student exchange.

  • Work collaboratively with other professional staff in the Center for Student Support and Advocacy as well as the Division of Student Affairs.

Ancillary Duties:

Serve on University committees and other duties as assigned.

Salary

$48,500 - $52,000

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university

  • Must be either a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States in order to meet the requirements to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)

  • Valid unrestricted driver’s license and ability to drive a 12-passenger van

  • Willing and able to travel internationally

  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets (Excel), Adobe and databases

  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials

  • Experience with international travel and/or study away programs and activities

  • Experience where it was necessary to maintain confidentiality or willingness to complete confidentiality training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership to NAFSA or related professional organization

  • Knowledge of SEVIS system and processes

  • DSO or ARO training

  • Experience working in higher education setting.

  • Experience working with international students, international populations, or living/working internationally

  • Experience working with diverse cultures
