+:----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | | | | Legal Assistant | | | | The Legal Assistant's primary role is to support the attorneys in | | BYU's Office of General Counsel (OGC), particularly in matters | | pertaining to records management, pre-litigation, litigation, and | | government agency action for all CES institutions of higher education | | (BYU, BYU-Hawaii, BYU-Idaho, and Ensign College). Through a | | combination of formal education, training, and experience, the Legal | | Assistant possesses knowledge and expertise that qualifies her or him | | to independently perform work of a legal nature under the supervision | | of an attorney, as well as to work collaboratively in an office | | setting. Services by the Legal Assistant include both legal and | | technical services in the following areas: litigation management and | | support, subpoenas and record requests, document production, | | trademark administration, corporate filings, and records management. | | | | Essential Functions | | | | 1. General Legal Assistant Functions  | | | | - Assist OGC attorneys in serving all CES institutions of higher | | education, particularly related to records management, | | pre-litigation, litigation, and government agency action | | - Draft legal pleadings, discovery, notices, and correspondence | | - Conduct research and gather facts from a variety of sources, | | including both paper-based and computer-file record systems, | | collect and organize documents from university departments, and | | prepare memos as directed by OGC attorneys | | - Coordinate with outside counsel and opposing counsel on various | | matters | | - Coordinate with the litigation practice group chair on weekly | | group meetings | | - Provide litigation support in all phases of cases, including | | litigation holds, discovery, motion practice, mediation, | | arbitration, trial preparation, trial, and appeals | | - Coordinate case file organization, docketing, and management, | | including via internal litigation website | | - Manage court filings for OGC | | - Manage and oversee university litigation holds | | - Assist and coordinate on subpoenas and records authorizations | | - Maintain legal journal and research platform subscriptions | | - Construct annual audit letters to CES schools | | | | 2. Records Management  | | | | - Oversee and manage legal document storage in iManage and Box | | - Apply document retention schedules | | - Serve as the primary records management system contact/liaison | | for the OGC | | - Conduct record management related trainings | | | | 3. Trademarks  | | | | - Assist designated attorney with filing, tracking, and renewing | | federal and state trademark applications for BYU, BYU-Hawaii, | | BYU-Idaho, and Ensign College | | | | 4. Miscellaneous  | | | | - Coordinate with university representatives on corporate filings | | | | Education/Experience | | | | Minimum education/experience required: | | | | - Bachelor's degree | | - Minimum of three years' experience performing administrative, | | clerical, or legal services in a business or legal office setting | | | | Preferred: | | | | - Five years' experience in a legal office setting, including | | experience in higher education, performing legal | | assistant/paralegal work | | - Paralegal certificate | | | | Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications: | | | | -  A firm commitment to the mission of BYU, proven maturity, good | | judgment, and ability to respect confidential information | | (required) | | - The ability to work closely, effectively, and collaboratively | | with OGC attorneys and staff ( | | required) | | - Outstanding oral and written communication, analytical, and | | interpersonal skills (required) | | - Outstanding problem-solving and research skills (required) | | - The ability to stay current with the rules of civil procedure and | | other court rules (required) | | - Technical skills in working with common computer programs and | | web-based applications (required) | | - The ability to stay current with legal developments, statutory, | | regulatory, and case law (required) | | - Working knowledge of the university's structure and operations | | (preferred) | | | | Employee Class: 3/4 Time (28 hour) | | | | Work Location: Provo Campus | |
